Metrolink trains in SoCal are offering free fares on Wednesday — see where the promo applies

Southern Californians are getting a rare chance to beat the soul-crushing traffic of the 405 and the 101 — without spending a single dime on gas, Uber or transit fares.

For one day only — Wednesday, April 22 — regional rail operator Metrolink is throwing open its doors and letting locals hop aboard at any station in its lengthy network, completely free of charge.

The no-cost event, held in honor of Earth Day, allows Angelenos and suburbanites alike to board trains bound for top day trip destinations, great beaches and historic and charming small towns, with regular service from Los Angeles Union Station — all without reaching for their wallets.

Riders can simply “step aboard and go,” the agency said in an announcement of the giveaway.

In a region where commuting costs can easily stack up—from gas to parking to rising transit fares — the one-day giveaway is a rare break.

The fare-free deal applies across all lines, including the Arrow service. The promotion spans Metrolink’s entire six-county system — connecting destinations across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura and San Diego counties, along more than 500 miles of track.

In other words, it’s not just for a quick commute—it’s a choose-your-own-adventure across Southern California.

The freebies don’t stop at the train tracks, either. Metrolink is teaming up with several regional partners to ensure your entire trek is covered. Riders can transfer for free to LA Metro (which includes buses and rail), OCTA in Orange County, and transit services in Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties.

For the extra ambitious, the deal unlocks a wide range of adventures.

In San Clemente, where Spanish-style architecture meets laid-back surf culture, visitors can walk the popular pier, grab a coffee along Del Mar Street, or stroll the coastal trail before hopping back on the train at one of the most scenic stations in the network, steps from the Pacific Ocean.

In Orange, a dose of vintage SoCal awaits at the Old Towne Orange Plaza, packed with antique shops, diners and historic buildings.

Make a longer stop at Union Station in LA, one of the nation’s most beautiful transit hubs, then explore neighboring areas like thriving Little Tokyo. Grab lunch at the bustling Grand Central Market in the Historic Core, then head up Bunker Hill to snap pics and see the modern art at The Broad.

Or, if a more chill day is in the cards, there’s the line that ends in Ventura, where a golden-hour sunset by the pier and fresh catch seafood from the marina in nearby Oxnard is always worth the journey.

Metrolink says the annual free ride is designed to get drivers out of their cars and onto public transit, offering a “more sustainable, less stressful way” to travel.

“Earth Day is a reminder that small changes, like choosing public transit over driving one day a week, can have a meaningful impact,” Metrolink Board Chair Doug Chaffee said in a written statement.

Metrolink will be running on a special, modified weekday schedule on Wednesday, so savvy travelers are encouraged to check the timetables before heading to the platform.

Hoping to turn first-time riders into regulars while cutting down on traffic and pollution, Metrolink has made the fare-free Earth Day event an annual tradition.
