A single mom’s request has sparked a massive amount of backlash, with hundreds of people criticising her “entitled” behavior.
The debate kicked off last week when the 32-year-old woman’s younger brother turned to Reddit for help after the pair got into a heated argument.
The 27-year-old said he always tries to help out his sister, who is a single mom to her 5-year-old son, as much as he can, whether it’s babysitting, picking up groceries or driving to appointments.
But her most recent request sent him over the edge, leaving him wondering if he’s the a**hole in this situation.
Earlier this month, he was all set to go on a weekend trip with two friends. They had planned it weeks in advance and had already paid for the hotel.
However, the Friday night before they were due to leave, his sister called and asked if he could babysit because she’s already agreed to cover an extra shift at work.
“I told her I couldn’t because I was going out of town,” the man said. “She got annoyed and said I could easily reschedule since it was just a trip with friends. I explained that everything was booked and that my friends had already arranged their schedules around it.”
The 27-year-old’s sister labeled him “selfish” and told him he had “no idea how difficult it was to raise a child alone.”
“I was sitting on my couch scrolling through my phone when she called again. I told her I understood she had responsibilities and that I wasn’t trying to make her life harder, but being a single mom didn’t mean everyone else had to rearrange their lives around her,” he said.
“She went quiet for a few seconds and then told me that was an incredibly insensitive thing to say.”
Soon, their mom got in on the drama. While she agreed her son wasn’t obligated to take care of his nephew, he should apologize for how he worded his rejection, she said.
The man said he did ultimately go on the trip, but the entire interaction was still very much on his mind.
Single mum slammed for ‘entitled’ request
The post was removed from Reddit after it attracted an overwhelming response from thousands of people, most of whom took his side.
“It may have been a little insensitive, but someone needed to say it. Unfortunately, part of being a single parent is needing to realize that while it’s lovely people in your life are willing to help you out, it’s not their child or responsibility,” one person commented online.
Numerous single moms joined in on the chat.
“As someone who spent five years raising her daughter alone, I agree with this. It’s harsh, but it’s the reality,” one woman said.
“This is the truth. I’m a single mom [who has] had incredible support from my family over the years, but at the end of the day, my problems are mine, and I cannot, will not, ever expect to be entitled to their help. They owe me zero; everything they have given was an amazing bonus,” another agreed.
Expert weighs in on heated debate
Etiquette expert Kate Heussler, who is raising her daughter as a single mom in Sydney, told news.com.au she has “enormous empathy for parents juggling work, childcare and financial responsibilities, particularly those without family support.”
There’s “absolutely nothing wrong” with signing on to work an additional shift and earn money to provide for your child; however, “accepting that shift before securing childcare, then expecting a sibling to cancel a pre-booked, paid-for holiday, is where a reasonable request becomes an unreasonable expectation,” she explained.
It’s reasonable to ask family for help, but equally acceptable for them to say no. Heussler pondered why the responsibility fell to the sibling, rather than the mom seeking out alternative childcare options.
“Being a single parent doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone, and it certainly doesn’t mean everyone around you must put their own lives on hold,” Heussler said.
“It takes a village to raise a child, and that village also shouldn’t be expected to operate like a 24-hour, unpaid childcare center.”
The model and businesswoman told news.com.au she believes the sibling tiff highlights a “much bigger conversation” about how quickly society judges single parents, particularly single mothers, without considering the circumstances that left them parenting alone in the first place.
“We’re often very quick to criticize the parent who’s visibly struggling to juggle work and childcare, yet remarkably quiet about the absent parent who may have left them carrying the entire responsibility,” she said. “It’s a curious double standard when the parent who stayed and showed up is the one receiving all the criticism, while the parent who disappeared seemingly gets a free pass.”
