Dictionary.com just dropped its Word of the Year — and it’s already maxing out people’s patience.
In line with the growing social media trend toward seemingly never-ending self-optimization, the site has declared “maxxing” — meaning “maximizing” or “increasing” — as the top word of 2026.
According to Dictionary.com’s research, “maxxing” was used almost 19 times more in 2026 than in 2025, with “looks-maxxing” showing up over 900% more often this year.
In other words: People have been maxxing their use of the term “maxxing.” (Sorry.)
The phrase can stand alone, or be used as a modifier for fitness and wellness activities.
Among the most popular are looksmaxxing (optimizing appearance), fibermaxxing (getting the most possible fiber in one’s diet), proteinmaxxing and even productivity-maxxing.
“In a year dominated by discussions of technology’s role in society, it’s only natural that we selected a word that was forged online,” the site’s announcement of the 2026 Word of the Year reads.
But of all the ways to max, “looksmaxxing” has gotten the maximum exposure online.
The term for ultimate appearance optimization, “looksmaxxing” began on shadowy message boards in the involuntarily celibate (or “incel”) community in the mid-2010s.
It skyrocketed to mainstream status as TikTok creators began using it in the early 2020s, with disgraced livestreamer Braden Peters, a.k.a. Clavicular, leading the charge.
Today, looksmaxxing is a mainstream slang term applied to everything from intense workouts to deep conditioners at the salon.
On Instagram, a quick search of the hashtag reveals a staggering 523K posts.
But when Dictionary.com announced their choice on social media, they were met with a maximum amount of digital groans.
“I understand why, but I still hate this for us as a society lol,” said one fed-up commenter.
“We are living in the worst timeline,” added another.
Some reactions, however, were more positive.
“Such a spot-on word for 2026! I’m definitely knowledge-maxxing by reading more every day,” said one cheery word-lover.
Other contenders for Dictionary.com’s Word of 2026:
“Affordability” (a hot topic these days, the wordsmiths point out); “data center” (AI panic, anyone?), “odyssey” (as in the Matt Damon movie) and “unc” — another internet slang term, short for “uncool” or “out of touch.”
Say what you will about looksmaxxing, but at least it’s a word with actual letters.
Last year’s Dictionary.com pick was “67,” the viral Gen Z and Gen Alpha term that serves as a catch-all phrase for middle school students — and, more importantly, works overtime to drive their Baby Boomer and Gen X teachers crazy.
