Diet Coke is the go-to zero calorie soda — but rival fizzy drink is climbing in popularity

A bitter rivalry is brewing across global office desks and pub tables, as Coke Zero Sugar threatens to dethrone Diet Coke as the nation’s favourite sugar-free fizz.

For decades, Diet Coke has been a beloved staple of many people’s daily lives, from essential 3pm work pick-me-ups to a trusty low-calorie mixer on a Saturday night.

It’s spanned multiple generations of loyal fans, with younger drinkers even rebranding the silver can as a modern “fridge cigarette” for anyone looking to blow off steam without reaching for nicotine.

Yet in recent years, the drink’s younger sibling, Coke Zero Sugar, has quietly grown, accounting for a massive 52 per cent of soft drink sales growth last year.

By comparison, Diet Coke sales have remained largely flat since peaking around 2006, creating a fierce cultural divide between diehard drinkers of both formulas.

The great debate

The lingering question dividing Aussie consumers boiled over during a routine takeaway lunch run this week, when my order for a Coke Zero was met with the dreaded hospitality reply: “We only have Diet Coke.”

That single interaction exposed an awkward truth: despite my intense brand loyalty to Coke Zero Sugar, I can’t actually pinpoint what separates the two drinks.

To put the rivalry to the test, I staged a completely unscientific blind taste-test across the newsroom floor to see if other self-proclaimed soft drink connoisseurs could actually tell the drinks apart.

Before taking a single sip, colleagues weighed in with wildly conflicting theories on what made each drink distinct.

“I think Diet Coke tastes more metallic,” offered one colleague, Bucky.

Another colleague, Gabi, was convinced the classic formula carried hidden carbs, asking: “Coke Zero has zero sugar, and Diet Coke has a little bit of sugar.”

For Abisha, the supposed difference was purely psychological.

“I think it’s a placebo and it’s not real, there’s no difference,” she argued.

Heavy consumer Ben, who routinely drinks four to five cans of Coke Zero a day, came through with strong flavour notes.

“Diet Coke just tastes like it has been open for a few days,” he declared. “Coke Zero has more flavour, picks me up a bit more, whereas I’d have Diet Coke if I wanted to have a nap.”

Heath stood firmly in the silver camp, describing the profile as unmistakeable.

“It’s distinct – one is more crisp, more bubbly,” he said of Diet Coke. “I can’t tell what it is, I just know.”

Meanwhile, Naomi declared Coke Zero “far superior” before the taste test even began.

“I think Coke Zero is the elite of the two, it’s superior and has a more potent Coke flavour,” Naomi insisted. “I think Diet Coke is watery.”

The taste test

When asked beforehand, nearly every participant claimed with upwards of 80 per cent certainty that they could distinguish the two drinks purely by taste.

Yet when presented with unmarked cups, the results clearly proved otherwise.

Bucky managed to pick his drink correctly, while Heath took a confident swig, declared “definitely”, and backed up his guess with a right answer.

Naomi also proved her refined palate by correctly identifying the Coke Zero sample straight away.

Others were completely humbled by the experience.

Gabi guessed incorrectly, while Abisha doubled down on her original theory after sipping both, maintaining they tasted virtually identical.

Ben spectacularly failed to identify his daily staple, quickly saving face by blaming the vessels: “It was because it was out of a paper cup.”

As for my own verdict?

Side-by-side, the two distinct liquids blurred into one indistinguishable flavour profile, leading me to believe my whole life was a lie.

With consumers clearly confused, Coca-Cola has officially stepped in to explain the difference.

A spokesperson for The Coca-Cola Company confirmed that while both options contain zero sugar, they have fundamentally different flavour profiles.

“Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar are both sugar-free, but they offer different taste experiences,” a Coca-Cola spokesperson told news.com.au.

“Diet Coke has been a much-loved part of our range in Australia since the early 1980s and continues to have a loyal fan base,” the representative explained.

“It has its own distinct, lighter flavour that many consumers know and love,” they added.

“Whereas Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is designed to deliver a taste closer to Coca-Cola Classic, without the sugar,” the beverage giant stated.

A marketing war

The surging popularity of Coke Zero – which initially landed in 2005 before being formally rebranded as Coke Zero Sugar in 2016 – is reflected in recent retail numbers.

Sales volume of Diet Coke rose a modest 1.3 per cent in the first nine months of 2025, according to industry publication Beverage Digest.

Coke Zero, meanwhile, rocketed ahead by 4.8 per cent over that identical time frame, building on a massive 10 per cent leap recorded in 2024.

Industry analysts point out that the two drinks also target different demographics.

When Diet Coke first arrived on Australian shelves in the early 1980s, it leaned into silver-and-white cans and lifestyle campaigns tailored largely toward diet-conscious women.

Male shoppers increasingly dodged the product due to an outdated social stigma lingering around the word “diet.”

Coke Zero then attempted to break that barrier by ditching the silver aesthetic for black-and-red packaging, targeting men through sports sponsorships, gaming, and backyard barbecue imagery.
