An outraged diner is calling out a major restaurant chain after discovering a surprise “admin fee” quietly tacked onto his dinner bill.
Earls Kitchen and Bar, a popular “upscale casual” restaurant chain with over 67 locations spanning the US and Canada, is now under fire after an irate customer exposed its controversial billing policy on Reddit.
The infuriated patron uploaded a photo of his receipt from a Denver location, where he had stopped in for a burger and a side of truffle fries. But alongside standard sales tax, the bill featured a subtle 3% surcharge labeled simply as an “admin fee.”
Itemized details on the check listed a deluxe burger for $24.75 and the truffle fries for an extra $3.00.
Yet the final tab was $30.86 before any tip was even considered.
“What the hell is even an ‘Admin Fee’?” the customer vented online. “Can a guy even enjoy a burger without being harassed and extorted in this God-forsaken place? This pissed me off… No tip for you!”
The post exploded with comments from fellow Reddit users fuming over skyrocketing restaurant bills and hidden surcharges. Countless commentators slammed the tactic as a cash grab and some say they plan to deduct any mandated admin fee directly from the server’s tip.
“I’m going to charge a customer fee next time I eat out,” one commenter scoffed.
“Looks like the admin is the tip. There you go, have your 3%, not getting more,” another chimed in.
“At this point, restaurants might as well start taxing us like Uncle Sam!” a third user ranted. “Earls’ fee, staff happiness fee, gas is up fee — where does it end?”
The Post reached out to representatives for Earls Kitchen and Bar for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
Earlier this month, Los Angles restaurant Üca Terraza was called out for charging a 5 percent administrative surcharge, adding an extra $8.25 on top of a mandatory 20% gratuity added to the check. After ordering two beers, a water, and three meals, the poster’s subtotal came out to $173.25, including the sneaky fee.
But with the mandatory tip and sales tax, the order set the diner back $226.36, prompting rightful anger from the patron.
The Earls receipt was shared on Reddit’s popular r/EndTipping community, a forum where fed-up diners gather to share frustration over tip fatigue and mandatory service fees, saying they feel social pressure and judgement for being anti-tip
The viral backlash reflects a broader national trend: a recent survey revealed that 78% of American consumers feel modern tipping practices have gotten completely out of control, while nearly three-quarters — 74% — reported seeing default gratuity prompts climb significantly higher on digital checkout screens.
Faced with automated tip requests, 59% of respondents admitted they feel guilted into leaving a gratuity even when service is mediocre and are increasingly frustrated by both the size of expected tips and the growing number of situations where they are asked to leave them.
