Young woman urged to leave ‘red flag’ romance after sharing ‘clingy’ boyfriend’s texts: ‘I hope she runs’

A young woman has shared that she feels “smothered” by her “clingy” boyfriend after he started tracking her whereabouts.

The 21-year-old said she’s been in a relationship with her 22-year-old boyfriend for nearly two years, but they recently took a month apart to focus on themselves.

Since they rekindled their relationship, she has been overwhelmed by his incessant need to know where she is at all times.

“My boyfriend micromanages everything I do,” she vented on Reddit.

A 21-year-old posted on Reddit that she took a break from her “clingy” boyfriend, but not much has changed.

“He didn’t used to be this clingy, but due to a rough year for our relationship, he’s now tracking every movement I make – I share my location with him for safety reasons.”

She admitted that she wants more personal space, but she feels her boyfriend won’t “let” her.

“I feel smothered,” she said, explaining that she doesn’t know why her boyfriend’s demeanor has suddenly changed, as she had never cheated on him.

In one message, the boyfriend asked where she was going after noticing she wasn’t at their apartment.

“I went to get lunch at a cafe and relax. I am exhausted after yesterday,” she texted back.

He replied: “You should’ve told me lol, but okay. Hope you enjoy it :).”

A few moments later, he asked her to send a picture of her coffee, likely to confirm she was at a cafe.

“Looks delicious,” he said, and she replied, “I’m turning off my phone to do some journaling.”

Then the boyfriend suggested she put her phone on airplane mode instead.

The girlfriend’s post attracted more than 5400 comments, with many taking issue with her use of the word “let.”

“What do you mean he didn’t ‘let’ you turn your phone off? Turn your phone off if you want to. As soon as you start saying ‘let’ in a relationship, it’s over. The idea of controlling another free-willed human being is absolutely insane to me,” one commenter claimed.

“‘Let’ is a red flag,” another said.

Meanwhile, dozens of people urged the girlfriend to leave before it was too late.

“I’ve been there, done that – it’s only going to get a lot worse. I hope she runs the other way. It was a big red flag! Hate to say it, it might already be unsafe to leave the way you could openly and casually in a normal relationship,” said one user.

“You know he only asked for a photo of the drink to verify she’s actually where she says she is. Crazy red flag,” someone else suggested.

Others suggested she was in a more controlling relationship than she might realize and to reach out to people for help.
