Fans heading to MetLife Stadium are in for a game-day nightmare.
The New York Giants and New York Jets share the East Rutherford venue as their home field — and it’s home to some of the worst overall traffic conditions on NFL game days, according to a recent study.
New research analyzed gridlock datta around all 30 NFL stadiums to rank every venue by game-day traffic congestion.
The study, conducted by Betpack, evaluated traffic data within a one-kilometer radius of each arena. Stadiums were scored on three key metrics: congestion level, average speed, and travel time per 6.2 miles, which were combined into an overall Congestion Score.
Congestion levels measure how much longer journeys take in traffic compared to free-flow conditions. Betpack calculates this by comparing observed traffic speeds with standard speeds when roads are clear.
MetLife Stadium landed near the top of the list as the sixth-most congested NFL stadium, earning an overall traffic score of 72.4 out of 100.
On game days, congestion around the arena surges 212.7% above baseline traffic, with average speeds dropping to just 13.4 mph. As a result, navigating six miles of surrounding traffic takes a grueling 27.7 minutes.
MetLife’s traffic issue isn’t novel. A Fall 2025 ranking by Pickswise painted an even grimmer picture, rating MetLife as the second-worst stadium for game-day traffic with a score of 30.3 out of 100.
That study found East Rutherford had the longest peak travel times, taking fans 38 minutes and 56 seconds to drive just 10 kilometers — nearly 10 minutes longer than at any other stadium.
Nissan Stadium, home of the Tennessee Titans, posted the worst overall traffic score, where crawling six miles through game-day congestion takes 60.5 minutes.
Rounding out the top five worst stadiums for traffic were Soldier Field (Chicago Bears), Empower Field at Mile High (Denver Broncos), Huntington Bank Field (Cleveland Browns), and Bank of America Stadium (Carolina Panthers).
“This was the 8th NFL stadium I have been to and the worst to get in or out of. Parking was awful and disorganized,” one TripAdvisor reviewer wrote of MetLife.
Another fan who attended the soccer match between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the stadium dubbed it the “worst stadium they had ever visited,” adding, “After the game, it took us almost 1.5 hours just to get from the parking lot to the highway (less than 1 mile away). No exaggeration.”
The gridlock isn’t limited to football games. Major event goers and World Cup fans have previously been urged to use transit options like NJ Transit as traffic alerts were put in place to manage the severe delays.
As for the NFL stadium with the least congestion, the Betpack study found Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, recorded the lowest overall traffic score at just 2.0 out of 100.
With both New York football teams starting the season with rare, promising 1-0 records, traffic near MetLife may only get tighter as the 2026 season unfolds.
