SIMI VALLEY, Calif. () — A woman was killed after being struck by a Tesla that ended up crashing into the outdoor seating area of a shopping center restaurant in Simi Valley on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
The crash was reported at about 2:30 p.m. outside an Urbane Cafe restaurant near Tierra Rejada Road and Madera Road.
Aerial footage from AIR7 showed the aftermath of when the white Tesla crashed into the outdoor seating area of the restaurant.
Police said an elderly woman who was walking near the restaurant was killed. The driver struck the woman, and the force of the impact sent the Tesla into the outdoor seating area.
Two customers narrowly avoided being hit after getting up from their tables moments before the crash.
When first responders arrived, the elderly victim was found trapped underneath the vehicle.
An elderly woman was also driving the Tesla, Simi Valley police Sgt. Rick Martin said. She was taken to a hospital with minor injuries to her wrist and arm.
Four juveniles were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. One was transported to a hospital with minor injuries as a precaution, while the other three were taken home by family members.
Investigators said the crash appears to have been accidental.
The restaurant remained closed as the damage is being assessed.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known and remains under investigation.
