Northbound 110 Freeway shut down in San Pedro after fire erupts in tunnel beneath freeway

SAN PEDRO, LOS ANGELES () — The northbound side of the 110 Freeway remains shut down in San Pedro more than a day after a trash fire broke out in a tunnel that runs under the freeway.

The incident was reported just before 9 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol. Crews remained on scene through Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. Though the flames have been extinguished, crews are now working on clearing debris from the tunnel, which was described as a pedestrian passageway.

At one point, the fire shut down both sides of the freeway until southbound lanes were reopened Tuesday morning. However, the closure of northbound lanes remains in effect between Harry Bridges Boulevard and Channel Street.

There is no estimated time for reopening. During a press conference Tuesday evening, officials said an assessment will be done Wednesday morning with the aim of opening lanes as soon as possible.

The northbound side of the 110 Freeway remains shut down in San Pedro after a fire broke out in a tunnel that runs under the freeway.

Caltrans officials are removing a large volume of water and foam that was used to put out the fire before they can evaluate the tunnel for any potential damage caused by the heat of the flames.

“You have the heat, which could cause what we call delamination – the concrete can crash and spall. It might expose the rebar… it could impact the structural strength of the freeway,” said Caltrans spokesperson Lauren Wonder.

As those efforts continue, L.A. Councilmember Tim McOsker is calling for stronger safety measures in fire detection, with a motion for Caltrans and the city to address ongoing risk to freeway infrastructure.

7’s investigation team looked into how many homeless fires have been reported and found that more than 70,000 have been reported across L.A. since 2020. In the area where this week’s fire broke out, 31 homeless and encampment fires have been reported in the last four years.

The investigation into how the fire started is ongoing. The tunnel is near a homeless encampment and fire officials said a lot of the items that burned are from that encampment – such as mattresses and clothing.
