A recall was issued for more than 2,300 pounds of raw, frozen pork breakfast sausage over a potential plastic contamination, according to federal officials.
Illinois-based Fontanini Foods LLC recalled about 2,320 pounds of raw, frozen pork breakfast sausage links that may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically clear, hard plastic, the Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced last week.
The affected breakfast sausage items were produced on June 23 and shipped to distributors in California, Florida, Michigan and Nevada for distribution to restaurants and other food service establishments.

The product was not available for direct purchase by consumers in retail stores.
The recall covers 10-lb. cardboard box cases containing “Fontanini PORK SAUSAGE LINKS” with “ITEM 393” printed on the box and “PACKED ON 06/23/2026” printed on the shipping label.
The products also bear establishment number “EST. 6944” inside the USDA mark of inspection printed on the box.

The issue was discovered after the company received two customer complaints about clear, hard plastic in the sausage items.
There have been no confirmed reports of injury or adverse reactions linked to consumption of these food items.
Anyone concerned about an injury is urged to contact their healthcare provider.
The affected food should not be served and should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in food service and restaurant freezers,” FSIS said in its announcement. “Food service establishments and restaurants are urged not to serve this product. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
FSIS classified the recall as a Class I recall, its highest-risk classification.
The Class I label indicates “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death,” according to the USDA.
