LONG BEACH, Calif. () — Long Beach is experiencing extensive damage from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel, with the city’s century-old boardwalk broken and eight homes along the peninsula marked unsafe.

Waves breached the wall along what remained of the boardwalk before high tide arrived Saturday night. By Saturday evening, the damage made the boardwalk inaccessible, and officials had posted a “No trespassing” sign to close the area.

Video captured a crack in one boardwalk home that extended from its foundation to the roof.

Officials in Long Beach announced the city’s latest preparations for Hurricane Rachel and efforts to address coastal flooding and tidal surges.

Waves pummeled the boardwalk’s wooden slats, bending, breaking and ripping them out of place. Crews worked to reinforce the area before the next high tide.

“It’s really heartbreaking to see how much has been affected with the surf and the high tides and everything. I mean, people are losing their houses,” said Stacey Sniezak, a Long Beach neighbor.

Sniezak lived on 65th Street for 45 years, just steps away from one of the eight homes along the peninsula marked unsafe with yellow or red tags.

“It’s just impossible to fix at this point, and I don’t know how they’re going to do that,” Sniezak said.

Long Beach residents, especially on the peninsula, are shoring up and bracing for more damaging surf.

High surf and high tides generated by Tropical Storm Rachel were expected to continue. The National Weather Service issued a coastal flooding warning through Sunday afternoon.

A mandatory evacuation order was also issued for residents on 64th and 65th streets along Seaside Walk.

“We’ve closed off vehicular access to the peninsula for residents only. We’re encouraging everyone else to avoid the peninsula all weekend so that our city crews can have access and best perform this critical work,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said.

With the entire city projected to feel impacts from the storm, residents lined up along the beach to collect sandbags and protect their properties.

“We’re building a house on 60th Street. It’s almost done, and we’re hoping it doesn’t sail off to Hawaii before we get to live in it,” Long Beach resident Mike Peters said.

Other residents tried to stay occupied as they waited to see what the storm would bring next.

“I woke up this morning, shoveling sand just to get my mind off things, just move things around and not watch the news — no offense,” Long Beach resident John Hurnando said.
