LARRY KUDLOW: The Socialist Democrats Will Spend Plenty If They Win, but President Trump Will Veto All of It

The winner of the Congressional elections is not yet known, but I was interested in an interview today with Congresswoman Debbie Dingell on Fox News. Here’s what she said:

“The first thing we’re gonna do in the first 100 hours as Democrats, I do believe for sure we will win the House tonight, is to reverse the Medicaid cuts because millions of people have lost their health insurance.”

She added that “the number of people that are now hungry, that can’t find food, go to the food banks, talk about the pressure that’s on them. We will reverse those.”

With all due respect, if  Ms. Dingell thinks some new far-left socialist-democratic majority is going to repeal the entitlement reforms passed in the One, Big, Beautiful, Bill last year, she has another thing coming.

This Democratic idea that President Trump and Republicans are taking away health care or food stamps is a complete fallacy. The landmark legislation, which of course included the tax cuts that have made America’s economic boom the envy of the world, also included work requirements for able-bodied people with respect to Medicaid, Food Stamps, and other programs.

Work is holy. It’s the backbone of families and communities and provides self-esteem so necessary in life.

What has happened after this legislation is that not only are more people working than ever before, but welfare spending has come way down.

This, by the way, is exactly what happened following the Clinton–Gingrich “welfare to workfare” reforms that worked so brilliantly in the 1990s.

That Ms. Dingell prefers welfare to workfare says a lot about her left-wing politics. And it gives us all a very big, fat hint that democratic so-called ‘affordability’ is nothing but a ruse and a cover-up for gobs of more Democratic big-government socialist spending.

It would appear that Ms. Dingell wants to discard all the fraudulent welfare spending, rather than cut it out of the federal budget altogether.

Which repeats what the Democrats did with President Biden, when they spent about $7 trillion which yielded a 9 percent inflation rate that grew to 21 percent over 4 years.

Government spending is one of the root causes of inflation. So here’s Ms. Dingell throwing affordability out the window. Throwing work requirements out the window.

Throwing the welfare reforms of the last real Democrat moderate president, named Bill Clinton — who favored workfare reform and helped keep inflation down with lower spending that actually turned into budget surplus, out the window.

He was working with Speaker Newt Gingrich and they were both working with the Fed chairman, Alan Greenspan, and the 1990s were a very strong period of economic growth, expanding tax cuts, and deregulation put into place by Ronald Reagan that generated the 1980s boom.

Ms. Dingell undoubtedly sees herself as some sort of moderate Democrat, different from the socialist antisemite candidate, Abduel El-Sayed, whom she backs in the Michigan senate race.

Yet the reality is, and I say this with respect, she is part and parcel of the leftist socialist tilt that has befallen the Democratic party.

And if they capture Congress tonight, get ready for Mr. Trump to veto everything they might try to pass. Because that’s the only way he can save America.
