BIG BEAR, Calif. () — Pip, pip… hooray! Big Bear’s famous eagle couple Jackie and Shadow welcomed not one, but two baby eaglets on Easter weekend!
The first eaglet broke through its shell late Saturday night, then eaglet number two hatched early Easter morning.
We have two eaglets! Two eggs belonging to Big Bear eagles Jackie and Shadow have finally hatched.
“It was just amazing. It was so exciting to go to bed and shoot out of bed the next morning, exciting to see what was happening with the other chick,” said Jenny Voisard with Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that operates the camera pointed at Jackie and Shadow’s nest.
Voisard says both eaglets appear healthy and are both eating.
“It’s great. Jackie and Shadow are feeding them, and they’re both eating at this point. They’re working on strengthening their neck muscles. They have a hard time keeping their heads up. They fall down a lot. They can’t see very well yet, but they’re just adorable,” she said.
The successful hatchings came after a setback this winter, when Jackie and Shadow’s first clutch of two eggs this season was destroyed by ravens.
The nest of Big Bear’s beloved bald eagle couple, Jackie and Shadow, was invaded while the eagles were away on Friday, breaching both of their freshly-laid eggs.
This is a bittersweet time for Friends of Big Bear Valley. The hatching of the eaglets happened two months after the person credited with the launch of the eagle cam, Sandy Steers, passed away.
“I think she’s in the nest, because that’s really where she wanted to go, and wanted to see,” Voisard said.
Sandy Steers, the executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley and a familiar face to many who follow Big Bear eagles Jackie and Shadow, has died, the organization announced.
So what will the new eaglets be named? Voisard says fans will soon be able to have their say.
“You can submit a name or two, or however many that you want, and then we will do a random drawing, and we will take a list of finalists to Big Bear third graders, and they will select the final names. And that was one of Sandy’s greatest joys was being able to do that,” Voisard said.
Friends of Big Bear Valley has not released further information on when the chick naming contest will begin, but it’s expected soon.
Voisard said as of Monday morning, about 44,000 people from all around the world were watching live. She reminded fans to enjoy the cute little eaglets while you can, because they grow up fast!
“They will change quickly. They develop fast, and they will be fully grown by about nine weeks, and fledge time is between 10 and 14 weeks, so definitely, you want to watch now,” Voisard said. “This is when they’re the cutest little adorable, fuzzy… just falling all over the place, cute.”
This time last year, Jackie and Shadow raised two eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo. After fans from all over watched them grow up, the two young eagles finally fledged the nest.
