Rail staff across Italy are set to strike from 9 pm on Monday, 7 September through to 9 pm on Tuesday, 8 September.

Passengers may also experience disruption in the hours leading up to the walkout and after it ends due to adjustments to the rail network.

Here’s everything you need to know about the strike.

What to expect on regional trains

For passengers who rely on regional trains each day, there are guaranteed service periods, but outside of these hours, trains may be cancelled or disrupted.

On weekdays, guaranteed services operate from 6 am to 9 am and from 6pm to 9 pm.

Outside of these time slots, passengers face possible cancellations, delays and changes to routes across the national rail network.

Trenitalia has advised passengers to check the status of their service before travelling, either through the app or the official website.

High-speed services and Intercity trains are also affected by the strike, and unlike the regional trains, they are not covered by guaranteed service periods.

Passengers are therefore also advised to check on the status of their journey in advance.

How to get a ticket refund

Passengers can request a full refund, although the deadline for doing so varies depending on the type of service.

For Frecce and Intercity trains, refund requests can be made from the announcement of the strike up until the scheduled departure time of the train.

For regional trains, requests must be submitted by midnight on the day before the strike.

As an alternative to a refund, passengers can also reschedule their trip on another service under the same conditions, subject to seat availability.

The unions are striking to demand better working conditions, improved safety and better-organised shifts across the railway sector.
