Simone’s pregnancy isn’t kept a secret for long on Grey’s Anatomy — thanks to Harry Shum Jr.’s character, Kwan.
In Us‘ first look at the Thursday, October 22, episode, Simone (Alexis Floyd) asks Kwan for his opinion on whether she should “have this baby.” Simone admits she’s “always wanted to be a mom,” which was motivating her to consider keeping the baby.
Kwan, however, points out Simone works 80 hours a week. He also mentions that Simone is six weeks pregnant, so she has time to figure out her options. Unfortunately, Wes (Trevor Jackson) overhears and storms off without asking Simone for more details.
Earlier this month, Grey’s Anatomy kicked off season 23 with the revelation that Simone is expecting — but she’s not sure who the father is after also sleeping with Wes and ex Lucas (Niko Terho).
Outside of Grey Sloan, Shum, 44, is pulling double duty while filming both DWTS and Grey’s Anatomy. Questions previously arose about Shum’s role on the medical drama after his character was fired in season 22.
“Who got fired?” Shum quipped to E! News in May, referring to Kwan being let go for secretly giving a patient an experimental treatment that was denied by the FDA.
Shum noted at the time that he didn’t know what to expect for the coming season.
“I wish I knew. I am just as much in the dark as audiences,” he said. “But to me, it’s the hope of, ‘Do audiences want to see him go or do they want to see him go back to the hospital?’”
While the show appreciates its fans, Shum clarified that what happens next is “not fully up to the audience,” adding, “It’s up to the writers and Disney. But also, I think it’s good to see the doctors make mistakes, but also with good intentions.”
He concluded: “It wasn’t just because he was a bumbling mess. He was very motivated in making sure that someone got to be able to choose life over death.”
Showrunner Meg Marinis, meanwhile, hinted that not every character would be safe as the show continues.
“But even in the last two seasons with what you saw this year, we had to reduce the cast a little bit [because of industry-wide budget cuts], and everybody has very passionate feelings about their favorite characters,” Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2025. “But if we can get the writers upset then we know we’re doing it right. It’s not as satisfying a story if people aren’t upset when someone leaves. It’s supposed to make people upset and sad, so I’m sure there’ll be some arguments. But I’ve been persuaded before to change my mind on things.”
