Games without frontiers: LA’s sports scene is international and world class

Los Angeles is home to one of the most dynamic sports scenes in the world — and it’s brimming with anticipation as it prepares to showcase that energy on the global stage.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or want a fun night out with the family, there’s something for everyone.

Los Angeles was named one of the 16 North American host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19.

Team USA will open its campaign at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) against Paraguay on June 12. Hollywood will host eight games in total before the finale in New Jersey: five group-stage matches, two Round of 32 matches and one quarterfinal.

More than just the games, the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will also host the FIFA Fan Festival from June 11 to 15 — a global celebration of sports and culture that features live match broadcasts, interactive experiences, live music and entertainment, and an eclectic assortment of food and drink.

There will also be fan activities scattered throughout the city, along with Official Fan Zones where fans and families can enjoy the games in a sparkling atmosphere.

Soccer

Pardon the interruption: LA’s professional soccer teams will take a scheduled break from their respective regular seasons to accommodate the 2026 World Cup. Major League Soccer will resume July 16, while the National Women’s Soccer League will be on hiatus through June.

LA FC and Angel City FC will then continue their regularly scheduled programming at the modern BMO Stadium in downtown Los Angeles. Angel City, which began playing in the women’s pro soccer league in 2022, offers unique promotions and fan experiences at every game — including Kids’ Day on April 26 and “Disney Princess Night” on August 16.

Meanwhile, the record six-time MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy will resume action at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. The Galaxy are currently offering a “Family Pack,” which includes four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas, starting from $150. The team also issues $20 tickets for students with a valid .edu email address.

Baseball

The Dodgers have embarked on their quest for a third consecutive World Series championship. The baseball superteam regularly draws the highest attendance in MLB through its star-studded lineup — headlined by Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani — as well as themed nights and bobblehead giveaways, and heritage nights celebrating the diverse cultures in LA.

About an hour down I–5 South and across the street from Disneyland Park, the Angels rolled out the red carpet for their home opener against the Seattle Mariners earlier this month.

In addition to a plethora of promotions and giveaways, Angel Stadium will host recurring family events: Saturday night fireworks and “Family Sunday,” when kids can enjoy games and activities until the sixth inning and even run the bases after the game.

Both the Dodgers and the Angels will light up the night with fireworks shows on the Fourth of July, celebrating 250 years of independence.

Basketball

The NBA regular season has reached its home stretch with the playoffs currently in motion. LeBron James, Luka Doncic and the Lakers are at Crypto.com Arena in downtown LA, although the Kawhi Leonard-led Clippers have wrapped their first season at the state-of-the-art Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif.

Meanwhile, the WNBA is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and Kelsey Plum and the Sparks are currently slated to open their season at home on May 10 against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.

The W has expanded to 15 teams for the landmark season — its most since the early 2000s — promising a thrilling campaign with new and returning franchises, along with the league’s brightest stars, making their way to Crypto.com Arena.

Hockey

Hot on the heels of a historic 2026 Winter Olympics — featuring the return of NHL stars after a 12-year hiatus and culminating in the US men’s first gold medal since 1980 — professional hockey has returned to the West Coast.

The Kings have five returning Olympians on their roster, and the franchise is currently running ticket offers, the first of which includes a $30 food and beverage voucher, and the other comes with a New Era hat of one’s choosing.

In Anaheim, Calif., the Ducks welcomed back defenseman and Team USA gold medalist Jackson LaCombe.

Games at the Honda Center regularly feature themed nights and giveaways, and special ticket packs that come with a signature duck-themed goalie mask.

Olympics

But wait, there’s more. LA will continue enriching its global sports legacy for years to come, as the world will once again converge in Southern California in 2028 for the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The international spectacle, returning to LA for a record-tying third time, will be held across several of the city’s historic backdrops, from world-class venues in the heart of the city to breathtaking beaches along the West Coast. While still years ahead, the “Road to 2028” starts now.
