Ford’s new electric truck can do more than drive – and it could save owners money

Ford’s upcoming Fathom electric truck will be able to supply power to a home without a separate wall-mounted inverter when it launches in 2027, the automaker said Tuesday.

The Fathom, which will have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) below $30,000, is expected to supply more than 10 kilowatts of AC power to a home. It will be the first EV from a U.S. automaker at that price point to offer the capability without a separate inverter, according to Ford.

The technology, which is known as bidirectional power, allows an EV’s battery to send electricity back to a home or the electric grid.

Ford said cost has been a major obstacle to making bidirectional power more widely available because EVs have traditionally required additional equipment, like a separate inverter, to convert battery power for use in a home.

EV batteries store electricity as direct current (DC), while homes use alternating current (AC).

“That price tag has kept the technology in premium vehicles and the hands of early adopters,” the automaker said. “Until now.”

The Fathom will instead have an inverter built directly into the vehicle’s E-box, taking away the need for a separate wall-mounted unit.

Ford developed the system for its Universal EV Platform after acquiring startup Auto Motive Power in 2023.

“The system is simpler and more affordable, so more EV customers can have bidirectional power,” Ford said.

The Fathom will be the first vehicle built on Ford’s new Universal EV Platform. It will be assembled at the automaker’s Louisville Assembly Plant, which is undergoing a $2 billion overhaul ahead of production in 2027.

Ford said utilities and regulators will also need to make it easier for bidirectional EVs to connect to the grid and participate in programs like virtual power plants.

The automaker formed a working group with five major utilities in July to “help define scalable interconnection processes” ahead of Fathom’s 2027 launch.

Ford previously offered bidirectional home power with the all-electric F-150 Lightning, which ended production in 2025.
