LOS ANGELES — “Dancing with the Stars” kicked off week five with “Super Bowl Night.”
The competition had 11 teams in play, and each performed a dance routine to a song from a memorable Super Bowl halftime performance.
Sportscaster Joe Buck joined the judge’s table to weigh in on this “super” round of dancing.
Here’s a rundown of the night’s judges scores, from highest to lowest:
Jenna Dewan and Val Chmerkovskiy: Paso Doble to “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga
Joe started things off by admitting he has no idea what a Paso Doble is but thinks she is amazing. Bruno called Jenna incandescent, with the routine thrilling from start to finish. Carrie Ann said this dance was the first touchdown we’ve seen this round and thinks she’s “in the zone.” Derek thought it was a Super Bowl champion performance.
Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9, 36 out of 40
Ezra Frech and Daniella Karagach: Salsa to “Hot in Herre” by Nelly
Carrie Ann said the dance was a master class in interpreting the movement of the Salsa. Consider her impressed. Derek told Ezra he gets lost in his performances because he commands the stage and is in control. Joe thinks there is a bright light that comes out of Ezra. Bruno said it was smoldering and he honestly doesn’t know how Ezra does it.
Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9, 36 out of 40
Amber Glenn and Pasha Pashkov: Samba to “Mi Gente” by J Balvin and Willy William
Carrie Ann said they brought the Super Bowl energy to life, great dynamics, well done. Derek thought she was confident and fierce right out of the gate. Joe asked his wife if he was allowed to say the dance was hot! Bruno said Amber knows how to get the party started and said how she interpreted this samba is what she needs to do with every dance.
Scores: 8, 9, 9, 8, 34 out of 40
Maura Higgins and Mark Ballas: Tango to “Only Girl (In the World)” by Rihanna
Joe Buck praised her frame and said she made him proud to be Irish. Bruno Tonioli called the dance extremely stylish, supremely elegant and complimented the duo’s ease of movement. Carrie Ann Inaba wants her to finish her movements but a great dance. Derek Hough said moving forward he wants more attack and fire but thought this dance was well done.
Scores: 8, 8, 9, 8, 33 out of 40
Harry Shum Jr. and Jenna Johnson: Samba to “Yeah!” by USHER featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris
Bruno said they played the dance beautifully but wanted to see more Samba and thought it felt like a freestyle. Carrie Ann agreed and wanted more Samba content. Derek said it was undeniably a fantastic performance, but said yes, watch the technique. Joe thought he did awesome work.
Scores: 8, 8, 9, 8, 33 out of 40
Julia Stiles and Ezra Sosa: Jazz to “Jenny from the Block (Track Masters Remix)” by Jennifer Lopez featuring Jadakiss and Styles P
Bruno called her “Julia from the Block” and thought she got into the groove brilliantly, and this was her best dance yet. Carrie Ann loved seeing her with such confidence and grit. Derek asked her to come over for a big hug and asked the audience, “we were all waiting for that,” and thought she did not disappoint. Joe said Julia could have been up on the stage with J-Lo.
Scores: 8, 8, 9, 8, 33 out of 40
Jackson Olson and Emma Slater: Salsa to “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars
Bruno thinks Jackson’s performance has improved but he still needs some work on technique. Carrie Ann thinks his confidence has kicked in, and while he needs to fine tune things a bit the dance was amazing. Derek said this was Jackson’s best dance so far and he looked like he owned the dance floor. Joe thought this was Jackson’s wheelhouse and he did a great job.
Scores: 8, 8, 8, 7, 31 out of 40
Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess: Jazz to “The Time (Dirty Bit)” by Black Eyed Peas
Derek gave Tyler an A+ for commitment to Jazz 101 and thinks they have wonderful chemistry. Joe told Tyler he was proud of him, especially for being such a tall guy, wonderful job. Bruno let us know when you go on the “Dirty Dancing” route it always works! He praised his timing as much better and appreciates how much work he put into the routine. Carrie Ann loved the lifts and not just lifting her up but putting her down with grace.
Scores: 8, 7, 8, 7, 30 out of 40
Tatyana Ali and Jan Ravnik: Salsa to “squabble up” by Kendrick Lamar
Carrie Ann said “thank you” because she saw the improvement and commitment and the fire. Derek loves watching her as a performer but wants her to attack dances a little more. Joe said the dance was his favorite of the night. Bruno also wanted more energy and told her to think about Angela Bassett as Tina Turner.
Scores: 7, 7, 8, 7, 29 out of 40
Connor Wood and Rylee Arnold: Samba to “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean
Joe told Connor America loves him because he’s fun and relatable. Bruno said Connor’s connection with Rylee is good, but the lower half of the body, with the fringed pants, hides a multitude of sins. Carrie Ann thought it was a fun dance, with lots of content, but maybe not the right content. Derek said joy and energy is a 10, but technique and timing need work.
Scores: 6, 6, 7, 6, 25 out of 40
Guillermo Rodriguez and Witney Carson: Salsa to “Titi Me Pregunto” by Bad Bunny
Derek said the routine was completely entertaining and fun, and complimented Witney’s clever choreography. Joe thought Guillermo took the judge’s notes and had fun, and joked “Andy Richter walked, so Guillermo could run!” Bruno said the routine gave them plenty to watch and think about. Carrie Ann told (the pregnant and not hiding it) Witney she is a testament to the woman who can do it all. She told Guillermo this was his hardest routine, but he brought the joy and made it work.
Scores: 6, 5, 6, 5, 22 out of 40
Those judge’s scores are combined with viewer votes to see just who will be eliminated. In the end, it was time for fan favorite couple Guillermo and Witney to pack up their dance shoes and head home.
Next week: the always emotional “Dedication Night.”
