Can a Serum Really Repair Your Skin, Scalp and Tooth Enamel? Experts Weigh In on the Buzzy New Formulas

Your skincare shelf probably already has a serum or two. Maybe a vitamin C for glow, maybe a hyaluronic acid for that dewy, just-left-the-facialist look.

But the serum world just got a major glow-up. The newest bottles aren’t just masking the damage. They’re claiming to actually repair it, and not just on your face. Now your scalp and even your tooth enamel are getting the repair treatment too.

Exosomes, growth factors, salmon DNA and mineral-packed tooth treatments are the buzzy bio-repair ingredients all over your feed, and they usually come with a price tag to match.

So are they the real deal or just really good marketing? Some of these ingredients have the science to back them up. Others are still waiting for the research to catch up with the hype.

PDRN skincare, the salmon-derived K-beauty treatment promising glass skin, has seen a 1,566 percent surge in search interest, according to a Two Face Aesthetics report citing Google Trends data. Here’s what dermatologists want you to know before trying it. What Is PDRN Skincare and Where Does It Come From? PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, and it’s […]

What Are Bio-Repair Serums?

Bio-repair serums are products marketed to help repair the skin, scalp or teeth rather than just improve how they look. Think of it as the beauty world’s shift from “cover it up” to “fix it.”

Classic serums leaned on ingredients like retinoids, hyaluronic acid, biotin and vitamin C. The new class swaps in a few lab-inspired stars:

  • Exosomes: Tiny particles released by cells that carry growth factors and other repair signals
  • Growth factors: Proteins that act like messengers, telling skin cells to make collagen or repair damage
  • PDRN: DNA fragments, often sourced from salmon (yes, really), that claim to help skin heal and recover
  • Hydroxyapatite: A mineral used in tooth serums to help rebuild weakened enamel

Why Are Exosomes in Skincare Suddenly Everywhere?

Because they tap into a bigger beauty trend: treating skin like a living organ, not just a surface.

Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Lara Devgan, MD, told Vogue why the ingredient is having a moment: “Exosomes sit at the intersection of several important shifts in aesthetics: regenerative medicine, cellular signaling, and a more sophisticated understanding of skin as a living organ rather than simply a surface to be treated.”

Do Exosome Serums Actually Work?

The potential is there, but the products are still new. Dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, told NBC Select that exosomes are “smarter and more comprehensive” than peptides and growth factors, yet “still relatively new to the commercial skin care scene.”

She also pointed out that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn’t approved any exosome product for cosmetic use.

“Exosomes are skin care gold for brands looking to market innovation,” she said. “The potential is real, but regulation hasn’t caught up.”

Are Growth Factor Serums Worth It?

They can be, if you’re patient. Growth factors have been in skincare for years and have more research behind them than many newer regenerative ingredients.

Dermatologist Kseniya Kobets, MD, told Marie Claire to think of them as “additional skin communicators rather than miracle ingredients.”

“Unlike fillers or neuromodulators, growth factor products are not quick fixes,” she said. “They’re a long-term skin health investment.”

Pair them with tried-and-true staples like sunscreen, antioxidants and retinoids rather than using them as a swap.

Can a Hair Serum Repair Your Scalp?

That’s the new pitch. A typical hair serum relies on biotin, keratin, peptides and plant-based nutrients to strengthen strands and condition the scalp. Newer versions borrow from skincare by adding exosomes and growth factors.

Plastic surgeon Yael Halaas, MD, told Elle that exosomes may calm inflammation, support hair-growth cells and wake up dormant follicles.

Kobets is intrigued too. “They’re one of the more exciting areas in hair regeneration research because they potentially influence multiple components of the follicular microenvironment at once, rather than only targeting a single pathway,” she told the outlet.

Related: What Is Spicule Skincare? Inside ‘Microneedling in a Bottle’ K-Beauty Trend

Spicule skincare promises the results of microneedling without the appointment, the downtime or the sting. That pitch has pushed the K-beauty trend into serums and creams sold in the U.S., and dermatologists are now weighing in on whether the tiny needle-like particles inside these formulas actually deliver. “As consumers increasingly look for at-home clinical-level results […]

How Do Hydroxyapatite Tooth Serums Work?

They add back minerals your enamel has lost. Hydroxyapatite is the mineral that makes up most of your tooth enamel, and it’s the headline ingredient in tooth serums and products like Biorepair toothpaste.

Your enamel is about 96% mineral by weight, with hydroxyapatite forming most of it, according to StatPearls. Tooth serums deliver that mineral straight to the surface of your teeth to help strengthen weak spots and, for some people, take the edge off sensitivity.

Can Tooth Enamel Grow Back?

No. Once enamel is physically gone, your body can’t regrow it. And acid is its biggest enemy, whether it comes from your morning coffee, a can of soda, citrus fruits or stomach acid from reflux.

The silver lining? Early mineral loss can sometimes be reversed through remineralization, which restores minerals to weakened enamel before the damage sticks.

Is Hydroxyapatite as Good as Fluoride?

Research suggests it can hold its own. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found hydroxyapatite toothpaste performed similarly to fluoride toothpaste in the included studies for slowing early cavities and supporting remineralization.

That’s why it’s become a favorite fluoride-free remineralizing toothpaste pick. Just know that most of the research has focused on toothpaste and other familiar oral-care products, not the leave-on tooth serums now landing on shelves.

Bottom line: before you add any bio-repair serum to cart, check what’s actually inside the bottle, not just the buzz on the label.
