Brits visiting US for first time during World Cup are apologizing to Americans: ‘We were wrong’

The British are coming…to apologize.

With the World Cup taking over towns all across the nation, travelers from the UK are getting a taste of the Red, White and Blue. And tons are offering up apologies along the way.

Many Brits have acknowledged on social media that their assumptions about the US were wrong.

In a string of TikTok’s from across the pond, Brits are earnestly sharing their experience in the US and revealing the media in their country “paint this weird narrative” about Uncle Sam.

“America is nothing like what the media tells us,” said World Cup traveler Oliver Henry, on TikTok as @oliver.henry.w, in a recent post.

Some of those tales told: Americans are rude, inhospitable, unsafe and proud — just to name a few. But folks are spotting a different side to the country, and falling in love.

Host cities have been welcoming outsiders with open arms as they take our commonplace for wonder. Our red fire trucks, Walmart, Buc-ee’s and free refills have tourists in awe of our heartland.

“Hundreds of thousands of fans for the World Cup are now seeing America through their own eyes, realizing the narrative they’ve been fed is false,” a Brit living in America, who goes by imjoshfromengland2 on TikTok, said.

He added, “We’ve all seen the videos of the Europeans experiencing America for what it truly is, and it’s amazing.”

He’s right. Recently, a German soccer fan went viral for posting videos documenting his newfound love affair with America’s hotspots.

Freddy, who posts on X as @FreddyLA7, shared his six-week World Cup road trip across the Southern United States, where he visited “the holy land,” or as we call it, Taco Bell.

He also gave Waffle House a glowing review after his 1 a.m. dining tour.

Followers of his all-American tour have flooded the comment section, offering up more staples for him to scour. X users are now begging the soccer (fan) star to hit up Grand Rapids, Philadelphia, and Lake Erie for a food tour.

Soccer fan Henry made a TikTok sharing his love for America and admitting that he had also gotten it all wrong.

“We owe America a huge apology…everyone is so friendly, everyone is so accommodating, and I’ve honestly had the best time.” The Brit spent his time in Texas watching England play Croatia at the AT&T Stadium and didn’t want to leave.

In fact, nearly $10,000 was raised on his GoFundMe account for him to come back to the States, where he can cheer on England once again.

Henry revealed that he will head to Boston for the England-Ghana game, then make the trek to Washington DC where he hopes to stay for the Fourth of July.

Despite Europe having a rich history filled with beautiful architecture, folks from the UK are finding beauty in what our melting pot has to offer. An Englishman visited Pasadena City Hall in California and was blown away by its beauty.

“Kind of feel like I’m in Italy right now…this looks like something out of Rome,” he said, staring at the building, which combines elements of both Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival.

“Whoever said America doesn’t have any history or any good architecture, they’re wrong,” he added.

Another TikToker named Skylar Skye posted her experience in the country after two weeks, “Everyone has been so friendly to me. Everyone wants to talk with me. Everyone’s been giving me advice about my trip and just genuinely being so helpful.”

“The American people welcomed me with open arms, and for that I’ve fallen in love with the USA. I apologise on behalf of the world judging you guys!” another Brit said on TikTok.

It’s unclear if the US and England will battle it out on the World Cup stage this year, but one thing remains — the bond between Brits and Americans has surprised us all.
