Best Wild West towns in California — and the popular spot that’s a complete fake

California may be better known for Hollywood stars, palm trees and bumper-to-bumper traffic, but head off the beaten path and the Golden State can still serve up a serious dose of the Wild West.

From abandoned mining camps frozen in time to Gold Rush towns where visitors can ride a stagecoach and belly up to a historic saloon, California is packed with places that look like they were ripped straight out of a Western.

And in many cases, they actually were.

Bodie, Columbia and Placerville, ominously known as “Hangtown,” all have roots stretching back to the days when gold fever sent fortune seekers scrambling into California.

Then there’s Pioneertown, perhaps one of the most convincing Old West destinations of them all. There’s just one catch — it was essentially fake from the beginning.

Here are four California towns where travelers can saddle up and get a taste of the Wild West, including the Hollywood creation that has been fooling visitors for decades.

Pioneertown

Pioneertown certainly looks like an authentic 1880s settlement, with dusty streets, wooden storefronts, a saloon and even a jail.

But this cowboy town was actually born in Hollywood.

The desert community was established in 1946 after actor Dick Curtis envisioned a “living, breathing movie set” where Westerns could be filmed while businesses operated behind the camera-ready facades.

Curtis teamed up with a group of investors that included Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Bud Abbott and members of the Sons of the Pioneers. The group purchased thousands of acres near Palm Springs and began building their cowboy fantasy.

The gamble paid off. More than 50 movies and serials were filmed there during the 1940s and ’50s, with productions including “The Cisco Kid,” “Annie Oakley” and “The Range Rider.”

Today, visitors can stroll Mane Street, shop, snap photos in front of Western facades and occasionally catch staged gunfights. The legendary Pappy & Harriet’s is also nearby for barbecue, drinks and live music.

Fake town, very real good time.

Bodie State Historic Park

If Pioneertown is Hollywood’s version of the Wild West, Bodie State Historic Park is the real deal and also slightly creepy.

Located east of the Sierra Nevada, Bodie exploded after a rich vein of gold was discovered in the 1870s. What had been a tiny settlement quickly transformed into a bustling mining boomtown packed with fortune seekers hoping to strike it rich.

The good times didn’t last.

Bodie’s decline began in the 1880s and its population continued shrinking until mining operations finally ended in 1942. Fires in 1892 and 1932 also destroyed much of the community, leaving fewer than 10% of the roughly 2,000 structures that once stood.

Rather than restoring the remaining buildings to pristine condition, officials preserve Bodie in a state of “arrested decay.” Interiors have been left much as residents abandoned them, creating the eerie impression that everybody simply walked away.

There are no restaurants or gas stations inside the ghost town, either. In other words, bring snacks and maybe don’t wander around alone after dark.

Columbia State Historic Park

Want your Gold Rush history with considerably less ghost-town doom? Head to Columbia State Historic Park in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Once nicknamed the “Gem of the Southern Mines,” Columbia boomed after gold was discovered in the area. By 1853, it had grown into one of California’s largest cities as miners, merchants and other fortune seekers poured into town.

Unlike scores of mining settlements that disappeared through fires, vandalism and simple neglect, much of Columbia survived and today it offers one of California’s most immersive Gold Rush experiences.

Visitors can wander historic streets, browse shops, eat hand-dipped chocolates, listen to music in old-time saloons or catch a performance at the Fallon Theatre. Seasonal stagecoach rides provide an appropriately dramatic way to tour town.

There’s also a historic two-story schoolhouse, cemetery and mile-long nature trail. It’s part history lesson, part theme park, except much of the scenery you’re gawking at is actually historic.

Placerville — aka ‘Hangtown‘

Placerville has vineyards, restaurants and charming Gold Country streets today, but its original nickname was considerably less inviting — Hangtown.

The community’s history is tied to the 1848 discovery of gold at nearby Coloma, which unleashed the California Gold Rush and sent thousands of prospectors racing into the region.

The booming settlement was initially called Dry Diggins because miners hauled dry soil to water to search for gold. Then things got darker.

According to the city’s history, after a robbery in 1849, three suspects faced an impromptu citizens’ jury. When someone reportedly shouted, “Hang them!” the crowd agreed. The men were hanged from a large white oak and additional hangings helped earn the settlement its infamous new nickname.

Only the stump of the legendary tree remains today, reportedly tucked inside the cellar of a Main Street establishment appropriately called The Hangman’s Tree.

The community officially became Placerville when it incorporated in 1854, but “Hangtown” never completely disappeared.

Today, Placerville mixes its rowdy Gold Rush past with a much more civilized lineup of restaurants, shops, wineries and nearby outdoor recreation. Thankfully, public hangings are no longer among the attractions.

So whether you’re looking to explore an authentic Wild West town complete with lingering ghosts or a historical movie site, there really is something for everyone.
