Popular bread recalled across the country due to milk allergen

It’s a crusty situation.

Nature’s Own‘s Hawaiian Bread products have been recalled by parent company, Flower Foods, Inc., due to an “undeclared milk” allergen, according to a recent report put out by the Food and Drug Administration.

The announcement shared that both recently sold 20-ounce single loaves and 40-ounce two-packs of the beloved bread, known for its “touch of tropical flavor,” should not be eaten by customers with a milk allergy or severe milk sensitivity, as the consumption could potentially cause an allergic reaction.

Nature’s Own Hawaiian Bread was recently recalled by Flowers Foods due to undeclared milk, as shared in a recent notice by the FDA. FDA

The 20-ounce bags of the culprit carbs, which were distributed to retail customers across Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, have “best if used by” dates of October 8 through October 18 of this year, with a UPC (Universal Product Code) of 0 72250 91662 2.

Product codes affected include 0188 262 20:06 through 0188 262 22:05; 0188 265 09:20 through 0188 265 10:30; 0188 267 04:50 through 0188 267 06:00; 0188 270 04:15 through 0188 270 06:05; and 0188 272 17:15 through 0188 272 19:25.

The affected 40-ounce two-packs, which distributed Nature’s Own Hawaiian Bread loaves to customers across the same states, have a UPC of 0 72250 00683 5. Specific product codes and “best if used by dates” were not posted for the bigger bread bags.

A Flower Foods company review found that recently made loaves of the sweet bread contained milk, an ingredient not listed on the packaging. FDA

The recall was issued after a Flower Foods review of the production records found that the loaves did not have milk as a listed ingredient. Though no related illnesses or incidents have been reported at this time, the FDA advised that the affected product should be discarded to protect those with the allergy, or returned to where it was purchased, where customers will receive a full refund.

The doughy recall is not the only nationwide, food-related snag as of late. Earlier this week, a whopping 122,000 cases of Gatorade were recalled across 37 states after its parent company PepsiCo discovered undeclared dyes in the drinks.

Additionally, a recall of frozen berries put out late this summer by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. was recently expanded to include a new lot, after it was found that the berries were potentially contaminated with a dangerous strain of E. coli.
