POMONA, Calif. () — A Pomona family is mourning the loss of a 13-year-old boy who was struck by a car and killed while he was riding an electric scooter to a friend’s house after school on Friday.
Angel Roman Mendoza Lopez sustained severe injuries to his head and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“He was a good kid; a golden heart,” said Angel’s cousin, Karen Torres. “The last call that my aunt and him had was, ‘Mommy, I got home from my field trip.’ And he told her, ‘I love you.'”
The accident happened on San Antonio Avenue, just north of Franklin Avenue.
Further details about the crash weren’t immediately available, but the driver stopped after the collision and was cooperating with Pomona police.
Family members say Angel was not wearing a helmet.
“It’s a 25-mph zone,” Torres said. “I don’t know how fast this car was going, but it’s just devastating to us.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the boy’s family with funeral costs.
“He used to be in the cadets academy. His goal was to one day be a police officer, and he loved, loved soccer,” Torres said. “He was a good kid. He had a good heart. There’s posts out there that are judging my aunt and uncle, saying it’s their fault. But it’s just one of those things. It was an accident.”
