LAPD withholds name of officer in Canoga Park dog shooting, citing threats against officer’s life

CANOGA PARK, LOS ANGELES () — The Los Angeles Police Department is withholding the name of the officer who shot and killed a dog in Canoga Park, citing threats against the officer’s life.

By law, police must name officers involved in shootings unless there is a a proven threat to their safety.

The attorney representing the dog’s owner is calling for transparency, saying the officer’s name should be released.

“The officers were responding to a welfare check, yet the video captures profanity,” said attorney Brett Greenfield during a news conference Tuesday. “It captures an unnecessary aggressive demeanor. it shows an officer with his firearm drawn from the very beginning of the encounter. It raises serious questions about the officer’s approach with this family.”

The owner of a dog who was shot and killed by LAPD officers in Canoga Park is now suing the city of Los Angeles.

The owner of the dog, named Jameson, is suing the city of Los Angeles over the June 13 shooting at apartment complex. Police responded to reports of screaming coming from a residence there, but the situation ended in tragedy when officers shot and killed a golden retriever-poodle mix.

The dog’s owner, identified as Marie, had been celebrating the New York Knicks’ championship win.

The lawsuit filed last week alleges that the officers involved in the incident broke department policy governing the use of force against animals.

7 EXCLUSIVE: A neighbor who called 911 during what they believed was a welfare emergency in Canoga Park is speaking out, saying they feel responsible after LAPD shot and killed a dog during a Knicks’ championship celebration.

Police say the dog rushed toward officers and attacked them, but the family says he was just excited.

The lawsuit claims that officers are authorized to use force against an animal “only when the animal poses an immediate threat of injury” under LAPD policy, and that officers are supposed to receive training to determine that.

The lawsuit alleges that if the officer who opened fire did receive such training, it was not applied in that situation.

The Los Angeles Police Department has released bodycam footage of a police shooting that left a dog dead during a New York Knicks’ championship celebration in Canoga Park.

Last month, police released body camera footage of the incident, which has sparked outcry from activists and animal advocates.
