YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — The park ranger fired for hanging a transgender flag in Yosemite is now taking legal action.
In 2025, former ranger and biologist Shannon ”SJ” Joslin and a group of climbers displayed the flag on El Capitan.

Joslin was fired and accused of failing to demonstrate acceptable conduct.
In the complaint filed on Monday, Joslin is suing the US Department of Interior, the National Park Service, the Department of Justice, US Attorney General Pam Bondi and four others.
Joslin claims the firing violated the First Amendment and Privacy Act Rights.
The documents show Joslin is asking for their job to be reinstated and to be awarded damages.
In a document from the Department of the Interior, it states Joslin was fired within the two-year trial period for failing to demonstrate acceptable conduct by participating in a protest outside the designated demonstration area and circumventing rules applicable to all park visitors.
