Work on water pipe that flooded West Hollywood to continue into workweek despite ‘significant progress’

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. () — A partial shutdown of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood could have a big impact on Monday’s commute.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) crews reported “significant progress” on Sunday after replacing a broken section of the 36-inch water pipe.

Video from AIR7 on Sunday night shows the massive hole in the roadway where crews have been working around the clock, testing a new section of the 110-year-old pipe.

The pipe ruptured on Thursday, sending roughly 17 million gallons of water into the streets of West Hollywood, flooding garages, pushing cars down the street, shifting massive chunks of asphalt and concrete slab and damaging several businesses.

Crews initially hoped the project would be completed this weekend, but LADWP now says the project will continue into the workweek. Approximately 200 personnel have been activated for the response.

They say they’re confirming integrity, pressure resistance and making sure the water is clean and safe. They’re also checking for leaks in the existing sections of the transmission line.

Businesses on the Sunset Strip said they felt the impact of less traffic in the area this weekend.

“Like with the World Cup final, I know today was significantly less busier than what it would have been, considering we’ve been packed for every single game,” said Benet Mvovi with State Social House. “It was still pretty decent, but I know that it probably would have been off the walls if this wasn’t right here.”

A new 25-foot section of pipe was installed at the rupture site on Sunday.

The final step is to backfill the trench on Sunset Boulevard before the stretch between Sherbourne and San Vicente and connecting streets can reopen.

LADWP officials said drinking water remains safe, though some nearby buildings are experiencing low water pressure. Residents and businesses near the break are being asked to conserve water while repairs continue and the area is supplied through a temporary, much smaller pipe.

Even after this fix is complete, this water main isn’t done.

LADWP says the aging pipeline had already been slated for a full replacement, but that larger project isn’t expected to start until 2031 and isn’t expected to be completed until 2035. The full project includes replacing nearly 10 miles of water pipe.

“While repairs to the damaged 25-foot section are being completed now, LADWP will continue moving forward with the long-term replacement plan,” the agency said.

Officials said anyone with property or vehicle damage can file a claim through LADWP at ladwp.com/claims.
