Spicule skincare promises the results of microneedling without the appointment, the downtime or the sting. That pitch has pushed the K-beauty trend into serums and creams sold in the U.S., and dermatologists are now weighing in on whether the tiny needle-like particles inside these formulas actually deliver.
“As consumers increasingly look for at-home clinical-level results without the downtime or irritation of aggressive treatments, spicules have naturally started to trend,” Rael CEO and cofounder Yanghee Paik told Byrdie.
What Spicules Actually Are
Spicules are microscopic, needle-shaped structures derived from marine sponges, silica-rich corals or certain plants. Some are synthetically produced. Suspended in a serum or cream, they are massaged into the skin to create very shallow channels that let active ingredients travel further than a standard topical could.
“Think of them as topical microneedles suspended in a serum or cream. When massaged into the skin, they create superficial microchannels,” Dr. Hadley King, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, told Byrdie.
Dr. Marie Jhin, a dermatologist and author of “K-Beauty Secrets,” described the mechanism to NBC News. “They are needle-like structures that come from marine sponges. Similar to microneedling, they act as tiny physical stimulators that create micro-channels in the skin, which can help enhance the penetration of active ingredients,” she said.
How Spicule Skincare Differs From Microneedling
Traditional microneedling uses metal needles that puncture the skin and are then removed. Spicules stay behind. The microscopic particles embed just under the surface and shed naturally with skin turnover over a few days, which lets them keep ferrying attached ingredients like peptides, glutathione or PDRN deeper into the skin, according to Jhin.
That extended delivery window is the key selling point. Dr. Julie Russak, a New York dermatologist, told New Beauty that the microchannels can stay open for up to two days, long enough to carry in larger molecules like hyaluronic acid that normally struggle to cross the skin barrier.
How Spicules Work on the Skin
Once applied, spicules cause a controlled micro-disruption in the stratum corneum, the skin’s outermost layer. That mild injury response triggers keratinocyte turnover, growth factor signaling and collagen production over time.
“Most topical exfoliants disintegrate dead cells at the surface. Spicules take this one step further by causing a micro-injury response that signals your skin to produce collagen and increase cell turnover,” Dr. Eleonora Fedonenko, dermatologist and medical director at Your Laser Skin Care in Los Angeles, told NBC News.
Russak framed the effect as a dual mechanism. “At the same time, this controlled disruption initiates a repair response. Fibroblast activity increases, collagen signaling is upregulated and the skin shifts into a regenerative state,” she said. “In practice, this dual mechanism is what makes spicules interesting. They not only improve what you apply, but also how your skin responds to it.”
A 2020 study found that combining spicules with stem cell-derived exosomes improved signs of photoaging in a mouse model and enhanced delivery of regenerative signals.
King said the physical disruption has a texture payoff too. “Because they physically disrupt the uppermost layer of skin, they can improve rough texture and enhance radiance,” she told Byrdie.
Who Should Avoid Spicules
Most skin types can tolerate spicule products, depending on concentration and the rest of the formula. Dermatologists advise skipping them if you have rosacea, eczema, active acne or a damaged skin barrier, since the same micro-disruption that helps normal skin can aggravate skin that is already inflamed.
Why the K-Beauty Shift Matters
Spicules land at an interesting moment for K-beauty. Many dermatology-led Korean brands are moving away from forced penetration and toward barrier longevity, lipid support and routines built around comfort and resilience. The new emphasis is on repairing the environment the skin needs to function, not just driving ingredients deeper.
That balance is especially relevant for people dealing with hormonal changes, chronic dryness, dehydration-related dullness or sensitivity from over-treatment. Spicules can fit in, but they work best as one tool inside a routine focused on the skin barrier, not against it.
