WEST HOLLYWOOD () — Sunset Boulevard is set to reopen Friday after the stretch was shut down by a massive water main break in West Hollywood just over a week ago.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has been working around the clock to repair a massive sinkhole at Sunset Boulevard and Holloway Drive that was left behind after millions of gallons of water burst from a 110-year-old trunk line last Thursday.
Earlier this week, crews encountered a slight setback in the work as water began pooling on the road after they backfilled the sinkhole and repaved the roadway. The agency said crews were forced to dig a new access hole to repair what officials described as a “pinhole leak.”
Welders completed repairs on that leak Thursday afternoon. Crews then began slowly refilling and repressurizing the pipe while closely monitoring for any issues before backfilling and temporarily repaving the area.
The LADWP announced it will continue performing water quality testing to ensure all standards are met before returning the repaired pipe to service. The next steps are to complete temporary repaving and lining the closed stretch of Sunset Boulevard at Holloway Drive.
The road is expected to reopen sometime late Friday.
LADWP said crews will return in the coming weeks to complete permanent repaving and repair a nearby bus pad and adjoining sidewalk.

Residents, employees and businesses in the area were anxious for the shut down road to reopen, but some are also worried that a similar situation that caused so much disruption could happen again.
On Thursday morning, another water main break sent water rushing onto another street about two miles away on Sunset Boulevard and Laurel Avenue.
That break was quickly stopped and did not cause as much damage.
