Ukraine strikes Novorossiysk, Russia’s last Black Sea sanctuary

Ukraine has struck Novorossiysk, Russia’s main operational hub on the Black Sea, which has become Moscow’s last major naval base in the region after sustained Ukrainian attacks forced much of its fleet from occupied Crimea.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as a “unique operation” and said strikes on the designated targets had been confirmed.

He gave few further details, saying Ukraine had used Palianytsia jet-powered drones, Neptune missiles and unmanned naval systems to target air-defence positions, piers and port infrastructure.

“The occupation fleet and all the infrastructure supporting it will not be safe as long as Russian aggression continues,” Zelenskyy said.

He also posted a video appearing to show Russian air-defence activity over Novorossiysk overnight.

Novorossiysk and its naval base lie more than 300km from the frontline. Kyiv’s strike is significant because it suggests that Moscow’s decision to move much of its fleet eastwards from Sevastopol has not put it beyond the reach of Ukraine’s forces.

By targeting the port that emerged as Russia’s principal Black Sea naval hub after its withdrawal from Crimea, Kyiv is seeking to show that Russia has no secure sanctuary for its fleet anywhere in the Black Sea.

Russian authorities didn’t not issue a full account of any military damage, although local reports described explosions and air-defence activity in the Novorossiysk area.

How Novorossiysk became Russia’s last Black Sea sanctuary

Novorossiysk has become increasingly important to Russia since Ukraine’s forced much of the Black Sea Fleet to leave Moscow-occupied Crimea.

For years, Sevastopol was the fleet’s principal base.

But Ukrainian missile and maritime-drone operations made the Crimean port progressively more dangerous, damaging warships and infrastructure and limiting Russia’s ability to operate in the western Black Sea.

Since 2023 Russian naval assets have been moved eastwards to Novorossiysk and other mainland ports.

The redeployment was intended to put the fleet beyond the range of Ukraine’s weapons. Kyiv is now seeking to demonstrate that distance offers only limited protection.

Novorossiysk matters not only as a naval base but also as a major commercial and energy-export port, handling substantial cargo traffic, Russian crude and petroleum products alongside military activity.

A sustained threat to the city could therefore create pressure beyond the immediate military target, disrupting logistics and maritime trade, affecting oil shipments and undermining the perception that Russia’s rear areas are secure.
