Tropical Storm Elida moving toward Southern California; High Surf Advisory to take effect Sunday

A tropical storm system in the Pacific Ocean is expected to bring large swells along the Southern California coastline next week.

Tropical Storm Elida is not expected to make landfall, but it has triggered a High Surf Advisory. The National Weather Service says that advisory will take effect 5 p.m. Sunday and last through 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The biggest impact the tropical storm will have is at the region’s beaches. The swell is expected to create strong rip currents and waves between 4 and 7 feet, with sets up to 8 feet at south-facing beaches.

Beaches in southern Orange County and down into San Diego will see even stronger surf.

By Saturday morning, the storm system was traveling 65 miles per hour several hundred miles off the coast of southwestern Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Wind speeds are expected to weaken as it approaches the SoCal coast, forecasted to reach 35 mph by Tuesday morning.
