Tribute artist Sharon Owens will perform 25 plus songs as Barbra Streisand in her 90 minute two act show titled “An Enchanted Evening With Barbra” taking place on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Boca Black Box Center for the Arts in Boca Raton.
Unlike many other Streisand tribute artists, Owens transforms herself onstage as Streisand and introduces herself onstage calling herself “Barbra Streisand” in her show.
Owens has been earning positive reviews for performing as Streisand around the world for over 35 years. Her strong appeal stems from her strong physical and vocal resemblance to Streisand.
“Ever since I decided to have a career as a tribute artist to Barbra Streisand back in 1990, I studied everything that was written about Barbra so that I can replicate all I knew in the show. I am old fashioned in a way as other tribute artists today do not necessarily call themselves as the artist when performing on stage,” said Owens.
“To me, the magic of a tribute artist is to become that person onstage. To do my work properly, I become Barbra Streisand on the stage. What is especially important now is that audiences know they will never see Barbra again singing live on stage, so it is up to me to keep her songs and memories of her alive.”
Although Owens did not reveal her entire song set in the 90 minute show, the audience should expect to hear Streisand standards such as “A Piece Of Sky”, “Don’t Rain On My Parade”, “Evergreen”, “Happy Days”, “Papa Can You Hear Me”, “Stoney End”, “The Way We Were” and “Woman In Love” among other songs.
Barbra Streisand, now 84, started her 65 plus year career in show business in 1962 and has been so well-known that scores of impressionists, such as Marilyn Michael and Jim Bailey, (along with hundreds of others) had long careers featuring a Streisand impersonation as the primary draw in their performances.
Owens, who is a natural mezzo-soprano, has become Streisand on stage all over the world, but has performed tours exclusively in Las Vegas for over 12 years. Although raised in Tampa, Owens also has residences in both Southwest Florida and in Las Vegas.
“I love my work and I hope to never retire and will be Barbra on stage for as long as possible.”
On the surface, Owens’ long career as Streisand seems glamorous. However, she has toured living in hotels for an average of 35-40 weeks each year over the past 35 years. Over the years, Owens has raised two sons with her now ex-husband.
“I am very proud that both my sons have been grounded and enjoy their careers now that they are adults. One son is an engineer and the other is in show business working behind the scenes with performers onstage,” said Owens.
As an observer of several Streisand tribute shows, Owens succeeds by tapping into the strong South Florida appeal of Streisand, especially among the LGBT and Jewish communities Owens also greets audience members after shows with her charismatic charm both on and offstage.
“I am aware that the odds of seeing Barbra Streisand perform live again is slim to none. Seeing Sharon Owens bring back all the memories of Streisand with her stories and her interpretation of Barbra Streisand songs takes me back to my youth and my love of her music,” said Dr. Linda Kaplan of Hollywood, who also is a part time singer..
