With gas prices climbing close to all-time highs, drivers are looking for any way to save. We all know the basic advice, but there are other tricks and tools that can help you get that extra mile.
The biggest saving tool may be the simplest.
“Bad driving is not just unsafe, it is expensive,” said Kandace Redd with AAA. “So you should definitely drive smart. That means no speeding, you need to really slow down. Your car actually uses more gas at higher speeds.”
Your car may also have features that can help you save fuel. Cruise control can save fuel by reducing rapid acceleration. Newer cars also have an eco-mode that can reduce fuel consumption, too.
“Normally, when you put your foot on the gas pedal, it reacts right away, that engine. But in eco-mode, it’s gentler and accelerates more smoothly.”
Eco-mode can affect your air conditioning, so don’t be surprised if your AC isn’t quite as strong.
Start-stop features, which turn off the engine when the car is idling, can really make a big difference.
“Research from AAA shows that it can improve fuel economy by 7%. That’s roughly about $260 a year.”
AAA also recommends shopping around for the cheapest gas prices near you, and taking advantage of discounts through reward cards.
And don’t forget to keep your car maintained. Something as simple as low tire air pressure can really hurt your gas-saving strategy.
