They may weigh less than a bar of soap, but these fresh new sneakers sure will clean out your wallet.
The Adidas “super shoes” that Sabastian Sawe ran in as he broke the men’s marathon world record at the London Marathon on Monday, April 26, have officially been released to the public, available exclusively through the Adidas app.
But a pair of the new Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 design doesn’t come cheap; they’re currently priced between $500 and $650.
Adidas boasts that the 97-gram sneaker is the “fastest and lightest Adizero supershoe ever made.”
According to the brand, the unique Lightstrike Pro technology “provides super-light cushioning, plus energy return for next-level speed.”
A foamy underfoot keeps runners supported, while the optimized outsole delivers strong traction despite the shoe’s airy build.
Another key feature is the shoe’s impressive stack height, which affects stability and shock absorption. Higher stacks typically offer better energy return. The Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 grazes just below the World Athletics’ 40 mm limit, with a 39 mm heel and 36 mm forefoot stack height.
Some previous Adidas Adizero models have sparked controversy for exceeding that stack height cap. The Adizero Prime was even banned from elite competitions in 2023 after measuring at 50 mm.
For Sawe, a 31-year-old pro runner from Kenya, these expensive kicks seemed to do the trick.
Sawe told reporters that a couple of qualities set these cloud-white trainers apart for the 26.2-mile race, according to Reuters.
“The big difference is it’s so light and very comfortable,” he said.
After crossing the finish line, he held up the $500 sneakers, with “WR” and “sub-2” written across them. The historic moment was also a major victory for the German sportswear brand. Shares of the company were up 1.5% as of Monday morning.
The Adios Pro Evo 3 has certainly made an impact, but these new, premium kicks aren’t the only top contenders in Adidas’ top-selling technical Adizero line.
Several earlier “super shoe”-style models offer similar performance features and are available at a fraction of the price on Amazon and on the Adidas site.
The Adizero Evo Si, Boston 13 and Evolution SL Woven running shoes are also popular options in the sub-$200 range.
