The best and worst airports for getting tipsy during travel revealed

These boozy flight hubs could take the tedium out of your upcoming travel plans.

Layovers can be grueling — especially amid Federal Aviation Administration woes caused by the government shutdown — leading countless travelers toward the nearest airport bar to help take the edge off flying.

A study by Upgraded Points found which hub makes it easiest to drink by analyzing 50 of the largest U.S. airports’ individual websites and Google Reviews — and one New York-based airport made the top 10 while the other two were in the bottom five.

The ranking was based on three factors: concentration (bars and restaurants serving alcohol per square mile), accessibility (bars and restaurants serving alcohol per 10,000 daily passengers), and quality (average star rating of alcohol-serving venues).

Coming in first place was Boston’s Logan International Airport (BOS) with a total score of 75.1 out of 100 possible points. The airport ranks above average in all three categories, especially bar density with 10.2 alcohol-serving venues per square mile, which is about 116% more than average.

Nashville International Airport (BNA) took the second spot with 72.4 points. The Music City airport has the third-highest bar-to-passenger ratio in the study — 76% more than the average. Travel experts noted that BNA “offers a bar scene that rivals downtown Nashville.”

In third was Kansas City International Airport (MCI) with a score of 68.6 and earning the study’s highest average Google rating for alcohol-serving venues with 4.16 out of 5 stars. This airport also leads the study in bar accessibility, with 5.6 venues per 10,000 passengers.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) ranked fourth overall in the study and second for bar density, with 13.9 alcohol-serving venues per square mile — nearly triple the study average of 4.7.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport rounds up the top 5, with the airport bars getting an average star rating of 4.01 — higher than the study average of 3.71. The New Orleans airport has 37% more alcohol-serving venues than the average of 2.7.

The rest of the top 10 includes Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), San Diego International Airport (SAN), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).

While LaGuardia may have come in ninth place, it ranked in the top spot for bars per square mile (20.4), intensified by the nearly $8 billion in renovations and terminal upgrades complete with wine bars and pubs.

The smaller land area of LGA boosts the density umbers, making it “one of the most bar-saturated airports in the country.”

Meanwhile, New York City’s other two main airports — John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport — came in 46th and 47th place, making them two of the five worst airports for an alcohol-filled layover.

JFK may be one of the busiest airports in the world, but the drinking scene is “surprisingly underwhelming,” requiring long walks between bars and navigating through large crowds which makes it more difficult than it should be to grab a drink.

Newark received the the lowest star rating of alcohol-serving venues in the study (2.84 stars), rounding out the bottom five airports for a pre-flight drink.
