MALIBU, Calif. () — A massive sinkhole opened Tuesday in the driveway of an oceanfront Malibu home reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, prompting city officials to declare a local emergency and order evacuations.
Just after 6:20 p.m., the city announced that a local emergency was declared and ordered evacuations for affected properties along Sea Level Drive as the sinkhole continued to expand and restrict access for residents and emergency services.
The emergency declaration was issued by Malibu’s director of emergency services in consultation with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department, with officials warning that conditions could worsen because of high tides and rain associated with former Hurricane Marie.
Evacuation orders were issued for residents of five neighboring homes along the private road, and the properties were red-tagged.
According to fire officials, crews were dispatched to a vacant home in the 31600 block of Sea Level Drive East, near Point Lechuza, around 5:45 a.m. after receiving a report of a broken gas line.
The fire department told Eyewitness News that erosion underneath the home broke a water line and a gas line. The Southern California Gas Company shut off the gas Tuesday morning.
AIR7 was above the scene as crews used sandbags to help protect neighboring properties from additional erosion. Malibu building and safety officials were at the scene assessing the property.
The home where the sinkhole formed is reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage. According to Realtor.com, the $10.5 million property was sold to the actor in 2024.
As the sinkhole continues to expand, crews are working to prevent additional damage. City officials said they are closely monitoring conditions in the area.
The American Red Cross was establishing a temporary shelter at Malibu High School, 30215 Morning View Drive.
The collapse comes as the remnants of Hurricane Marie continue to bring high surf and flooding to the coast.
