SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES () — Several lanes of the Northbound 5 Freeway were shut down in Sylmar after a semitrailer reportedly transporting produce caught on fire.
The vehicle fire was reported just before 8 p.m. near Roxford Street. The incident led to authorities initially closing all lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway in the area.
A SigAlert was issued effectively closing all lanes for at least 30 minutes while crews worked to clear the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Just before 9 p.m., the CHP said the carpool lane and the #1 lane were open, but all other lanes would be closed until further notice.
AIR7 flew over the scene as firefighters were putting out the flames. It looked like the semitrailer was a complete loss.
The incident created a traffic jam. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
No further information was immediately known.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
