CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. () — A father was killed and several young athletes were injured Thursday morning when a van carrying a girls hockey team from Santa Clarita was struck by a snowplow and sent down an embankment, according to authorities.
The incident happened in Clear Creek County, just west of Denver.
The Santa Clarita Lady Flyers were on their way to a tournament when a snowplow belonging to the Department of Transportation lost control and hit their Sprinter van, pushing it off the roadway.
The driver, identified only as the father of one of the players, died at the scene.
“Our 12AA Lady Flyers were on their way to Denver, Colorado, to participate in a WGHL weekend,” read a statement posted on the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers Instagram page. “We ask that you keep our hockey families in your prayers and that you give them time to sort through the details of this tragic event.”
Colorado State Patrol said one girl was airlifted to a trauma center. Four other players were taken to a hospital by ambulance. Officials have not yet released updates on their conditions.
