INGLEWOOD, Calif. () — An 11-year-old girl and her mother had an unforgettable night during Karol G’s concert Friday at SoFi Stadium, when the Colombian artist approached them in the front row, sang with the girl and then invited the audience to support the family’s tamale business in Santa Ana.
Blanca Salazar was able to save enough money by selling tamales to buy front-row tickets for herself and her daughter, April Salazar. It was from those seats that the encounter with the singer took place.
April recalled the experience as a dream come true.
“When she got to me, I said, ‘She came to me. She’s here. She’s here. It’s a dream. Someone pinch me. No, no, it’s a dream,'” April said.
The girl said she did not hesitate when Karol G invited her to sing.
“When she told me to sing with her, I said, ‘Yes, of course.’ Then I sang and sang,” she said.
April performed the song “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” alongside Karol G before thousands of attendees. After the performance, the artist praised the girl and asked the crowd to give her a round of applause.
The moment became even more special when Karol G addressed her mother.
“Hey, mom, let me tell you, you are raising a diva,” she told Blanca.
That was when Blanca shared that she sells tamales and listens to Karol G’s music every day with her daughter.
“Where do you sell your tamales? So people here can go buy them,” the singer asked.
“In Santa Ana, California,” Blanca replied.
Karol G took the opportunity to encourage support for the family business.
“Okay, she sells tamales in Santa Ana, California, so you all have homework: go buy tamales in Santa Ana, California. Mami, I love you!” the artist said before the thousands of fans in the stadium.
For April, the encounter carried even greater meaning because it happened just days before her 12th birthday.
After singing together, the girl received a gesture she said she will never forget.
“When I finished, my reward was a kiss from her,” April said.
“I felt like I was going to cry. My hands were shaking. No, I didn’t know how to react,” Blanca said.
After an experience they described as unforgettable, their routine continued the next day.
On Saturday morning, just hours after the concert, Blanca and April returned to their tamale stand, the business that allowed the mother to save enough money to attend the concert.
The family’s tamales can be found Wednesday through Friday at 1660 North Parton St. and on weekends at 601 West Civic Center Drive, from 8 a.m. to noon, in Santa Ana.
For April, Friday night became an unforgettable memory.
“I’m never going to forget this moment, because this is the star moment, star moment. Number one,” April said.
