Safety experts warn parents never to buy hugely popular children’s toy that adults also love

Bubble burst.

Experts are sounding the alarm about the deadly risks associated with this popular toy.

Water beads, the bouncy, colorful orbs beloved by children and adults, have long been used as home decor or marketed as children’s toys or therapies for those with sensory processing or autism spectrum disorders.

However, experts maintain that their colorful, candy-esque visage makes them easy to mistake for a sweet treat, with devastating consequences.

“I truly can’t emphasize enough how dangerous these water beads are to kids, babies, even pets,” Whitney Reese, an ICU nurse and mother of three, previously told Fox News Digital.

These objects, she went on, “should not be in a house or in any facility where children can be exposed. They are so dangerous and not worth the risk, even the slightest bit.”

If ingested, water beads, which are made of superabsorbent polymers, can expand to the size of a tennis ball and cause intestinal blockage that can lead to severe pain, choking, vomiting, dehydration, bowel damage and, in some cases, emergency surgery, according to the National Capital Poison Center.

Last February, an 8-year-old girl from Texas swallowed water beads, causing an intestinal blockage that shut off the blood supply to her brain, leading to permanent damage including speech delays, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking.

Doctors say polyacrylamide and acrylamide, two chemicals used to manufacture the beads, are known neurotoxins that could have amplified the damage.

In March of 2025, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and toy company Buffalo Games recalled more than 50,000 ‘Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits’ amid reports of injury and death.

In 2023, Taylor Bethard, a Wisconsin mother, called for change after her 10-month-old daughter died after accidentally ingesting a water bead.

“Water beads should be banned/recalled and no longer allowed to be marketed as a children’s toy,” said Bethard.

Bethard, a teacher, told Fox News Digital that if she had known the risks associated with the popular toy, “They would’ve never been in my house.”

Part of what makes water beads so dangerous is that their composition matches body tissue, making them difficult to detect via X-ray, which can delay diagnosis and increase the risk of serious complications.

Water beads can also be inserted into the nose and ears, where they can expand and cause tissue damage and/or trigger infection or hearing problems.

“If you have young children or vulnerable individuals in your home, it is safest not to keep water beads at all,” GP Dr. Ross Perry told The Daily Mail.

‘”There are plenty of safer alternatives for sensory activities and plant care that don’t carry the same potentially devastating consequences. Prevention is always far better than dealing with a medical emergency that could have been avoided.”

Perry emphasized that if you suspect a child or adult has swallowed or inserted a water bead, seek urgent medical care, even if symptoms are not evident.

“Symptoms may not develop straight away, and early assessment can be critical in preventing serious complications,” he underscored.

The symptoms of intestinal blockage caused by water bead ingestion are the same as having a stomach bug and include a refusal to eat, vomiting, abdominal pain, and constipation, among other things, said the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Tips for preventing and treating water bead injuries

  • The best way to prevent water bead injuries is to refrain from purchasing the product, although about a third of all incidents occur at school.
  • Call a doctor or pediatrician immediately if water bead ingestion, aspiration, or insertion is suspected.
  • Symptoms of water bead ingestion could mimic those of an ordinary flu or cold — and water beads do not always appear on X-ray or CT scans. Some may even look like cysts.
  • If a child is suspected of swallowing, aspirating, or inserting a water bead, early diagnosis and detection are key to a better health outcome.
  • Water beads can be toxic — and a single water bead could be deadly.
