Running holidays: Europe’s best destinations for a ‘runcation’

Sun loungers are taking a back seat as more travellers swap lazy beach days for active adventures.

New search data suggests demand for “active tourism” is soaring, with running holidays – or “runcations” – emerging as one of the fastest-growing travel trends.

Whether it’s mountain trails in the Dolomites or coastal paths in Madeira, more holidaymakers are lacing up their trainers in search of a different kind of getaway.

Experts at CamperDays, a campervan and motorhome tour operator, have revealed that a rising number of travellers are opting for holidays packed full of movement, rather than the traditional “fly and flop” trip.

The data showed that, over the last month, searches for active tourism have increased by some 5,000%, with searches for trail running particularly strong – up 20% versus the same period last year.

“Despite the name, active tourism is primarily associated with time in nature and exploring local surrounds without the need for public transport,” said Max Schmidt, CEO and Chief Adventurer of CamperDays.

“If you think a runcation means pounding the trails from morning until night, think again… A basic level of fitness is, in many cases, all that’s required. In fact, stopping for photographs, coffee and snack breaks, to catch your breath or even for a chat with those you’re with is all part of the experience.”

These are Schmidt’s picks for the best runcation spots in Europe.

Chamonix, France

Nestled beneath Mont Blanc, Chamonix is a bucket-list destination for trail runners. Its extensive network of marked routes caters to everyone from beginners looking for scenic valley runs to experienced athletes tackling technical alpine terrain.

Whichever route you choose, you’ll be treated to spectacular mountain views at almost every turn – and it remains a bucket list destination for hikers and runners of all abilities.

The Dolomites, Italy

The Dolomites are one of Europe’s best destinations for a runcation, thanks to their vast network of well-marked trails winding through dramatic limestone peaks, alpine meadows and picturesque valleys.

Whether you’re after a gentle morning jog or a more challenging mountain route, there’s something to suit every level of runner.

Part of the appeal is Italy’s unique Rifugio culture. These traditional mountain huts are dotted across the trails, offering homemade food, drinks and spectacular views, making it easy to stop, refuel and soak up the scenery.

It means you can head out with little more than your running kit, knowing there’s always somewhere welcoming to pause along the way.

The Black Forest, Germany

With hundreds of kilometres of well-maintained trails weaving through dense woodland, rolling hills and picture-perfect villages, the Black Forest is ideal for runners looking to escape into nature.

Routes range from easy forest paths to more challenging climbs, with plenty of panoramic viewpoints along the way.

Afterwards, reward yourself with a coffee and a slice of the region’s famous Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte – or Black Forest gateau – in one of its traditional cafés.

Madeira, Portugal

Nicknamed the ‘Hawaii of Europe’, Madeira has become one of the continent’s top destinations for trail running.

Its famous levada paths, which follow historic irrigation channels across the island, make it easy to explore dramatic cliffs and lush forests on foot.

Combined with a mild year-round climate and breathtaking coastal scenery, keen runners return here time and again.

Mallorca, Spain

In Spain’s Balearic Islands, Mallorca offers far more than beach holidays.

The UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana is crisscrossed with mountain trails and ancient stone paths, with spectacular Mediterranean views around every corner.

Whether you’re after an easy coastal run or a more demanding ascent, there’s a route to suit every ability.

After clocking up the miles, there’s no better reward than a swim in the sea followed by a leisurely lunch at a traditional village restaurant.
