PERRIS, Calif. () — A pregnant mom who thought she’d have plenty of time to get to the hospital ended up having eight Riverside County firefighters show up to her bedroom and deliver her baby.
It was quite a surprise for mom, dad and everyone involved. Now after quite a momentous delivery, firefighters from Station 90 in Perris received a very important visitor.
That mother, Tyler Wagoner, and 17-day-old Lily got to thank those firefighters during a heartwarming reunion on Friday.
“It was great to have them because I couldn’t do it without them. I was terrified that I was going to deliver her by myself because I was home alone,” said Wagoner.
On July 28, Wagoner woke up to mild contractions but told her partner he should go to work.
“I was like ‘no we got time.’ I was in labor for a while with my other kids.”
Less than three hours later, her water broke.
“I do remember they asked if I could try and walk to the gurney. I went to try and stand up and that’s when (they were like) no, we’re delivering the baby here.”
The rest, Wagoner says, is a blur.
In less than 10 minutes, baby Lily appeared.
Paramedic Corey Stearns said she was the sixth baby he’s delivered in his 10-year career.
“The baby came out normal and healthy and we let dad cut the cord,” Sterns said.
In the ambulance ride to the hospital, Wagoner recalls there were lots of laughs.
“We were cracking jokes the whole time. I wanted that epidural but I did not get it.”
Wagoner says the firefighters are family to her now, and the whole group suspects Lily will be hearing about her birth story for the rest of her life.
“I hope they all know that they’re all invited to her first birthday.”
If you’re wondering if baby Lily showed up early, she did. She decided to make her entrance at 38 weeks and 17 days. She’s strong and healthy.
