LONG BEACH, Calif. () — Intense waves from a tropical system out in the Pacific impacted homes and businesses in Long Beach again on Monday, forcing evacuations for some residents.
Residents were preparing for another night of potential flooding and high tides after an eventful weekend thanks to Tropical Storm Marie.
On Monday evening, Long Beach Firefighters went door-to-door, giving evacuation notifications for approximately 20 homes directly on the seawall between 63rd Place and 67th Place.
The Long Beach Fire Department said it was evacuating residents because the seawall is compromised, in addition to current damage on the boardwalk. Officials noted that there are also reports of damaged and cracked concrete between some homes.
The Long Beach Building Department was dispatched to the area to evaluate the structural integrity of the homes.
Eyewitness News crews in the neighborhood watched as family members arrived to help their loved ones evacuate. It happened as waves ripped across the seawall, slamming into homes.
The intense waves made their way into shoreside neighborhoods over the weekend, leaving behind inches of water and sand.

Residents in communities like Long Beach and Seal Beach are cleaning up flooding and debris after water washed over berms and into neighborhoods.
The boardwalk has suffered damage, and the city of Long Beach said it was making sure it was still structurally sound enough for people to walk on.
“We’re going to have to do a real assessment on the boardwalk, the impact of this storm on the boardwalk, the impact of this storm on the waterfront here, and what that looks like — how we do this, how do we reinforce this, and how we build up, because this is just the beginning,” said Long Beach Fire Batt. Chief Jake Heflin.
Water and sand entered several homes along the seawall.
Sand berms that were built to keep the ocean out disintegrated, covering several streets along the peninsula with sand.
“Well, if it’s anything like last night, the water is definitely jumping over the wall about eight feet or so, so hopefully everything kind of holds that we’re trying to do here, and we’ll just kind of maintain it,” said Long Beach Peninsula resident Rob Quest.
“The climate emergency is real. This is one event, but we have to be honest, this will happen again,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson.
As the sun set around 7 p.m. Monday and the high tide moved in, a crowd amassed on the low-lying oceanfront streets for a dangerously close view of the natural spectacle.
“We just hope we will still have a house at the end of this,” said Paula Attina, whose home vibrated with each wave break. “The entire house — it feels like an earthquake.”
Each wave chipped away more pieces of the break wall, sending bits of the structure designed for protection floating out to sea.
“This is the worst one that we’ve had,” Attina said
“I’m so sad. This is not good,” said Long Beach resident Sheila Jones. “Homes are being destroyed. We don’t have a beach.”
Longtime residents slogged back offshore through standing water and sand sludge at rescuers’ warnings. They fear this may just be the first of what’s expected to be a super El Niño season.
“This is the beginning. I think we probably have at least three to four more of this kind of thing to happen,” Jones said.
A Coastal Flood Advisory and a High Surf Advisory remain in place until 11 p.m. Tuesday.
