What can money buy when you’re travelling in the sky at 40,000 feet?

Beyond the hefty price tag that comes with first-class fares, AirAdvisor has scoured the world’s major international airlines to rank the “most outrageous” individual experiences on offer both in-flight and before takeoff.
The company created a longlist of the “extraordinary premium amenities” currently on offer by airlines and assessed experiences that could only be independently verified through official airline or airport sources.
AirAdvisor’s ranking of the top 10 most outrageous airline luxuries in 2026 excluded private aviation, discontinued amenities, concepts not yet available to the public as well as standard offerings, like lounge access, amenity kits and conventional lie-flat seats.
“Premium air travel has become an arms race,” said Anton Radchenko, Founder and CEO of AirAdvisor.
“A lie-flat seat is no longer enough to stand out: airlines are now competing with bedrooms, showers, private lounges and spaces designed for couples or groups.
“What is striking is how scarce many of these experiences remain – often limited to one aircraft type or only a handful of routes.”
The 10 most outrageous airline luxuries in 2026
The research scored qualifying luxury experiences out of 100 across five criteria: extravagance, which had a weight of 35%; rarity 25%; privacy and exclusivity 20%; access scarcity 10%; and beyond-the-seat experience 10%, which looks at offerings such as showers, spas or private apartment-style space.
Here’s how the top 10 experiences ranked:
- 1. Etihad Airways’ The Residence – 98/100: Three-room apartment in the sky
- 2. Emirates’ A380 Shower Spa – 91/100: Shower at 40,000 feet
- 3. SWISS’ First Grand Suite – 88/100: Private loft in the sky for up to three people
- 4. Air France’s La Première – 85/100: Private 45 m² suite before boarding the flight
- 5. Singapore Airlines’ Suites – 82/100: Cabin class with a separate seat and double bed
- 6. Lufthansa’s Allegris Suite Plus – 80/100: Two-person first class suite that becomes a double bed
- 7. Japan Airlines’ A350-1000 First – 78/100: 1.23m-wide suite with a minibar and 43-inch screen
- 8. Emirates’ A380 Onboard Lounge – 76/100: Cocktail bar at 40,000 feet
- 9. Qatar Airways’ Al Safwa First Lounge – 72/100: Thermal jacuzzi before boarding
- 10. Virgin Atlantic’s Retreat Suite – 68/100: Business class suite where four people can dine together
AirAdvisor only considered a maximum of two experiences per airline to avoid the ranking being dominated by a single carrier. The research was also based on information from September 2026.
An apartment, shower and ‘loft’ in the air?
The top spot was awarded to The Residence experience by Etihad Airways, which offers travellers a three-room suite to relax in even before they’ve reached their destination.
It features a private bedroom, ensuite shower facility and separate living room. Meanwhile, before boarding, travellers can also benefit from home or hotel check-in, chauffeur transfers and a personalised welcome when they get to the airport.
“The Residence achieved near-maximum marks for extravagance, rarity, privacy and the extent to which it goes beyond a conventional airline seat,” AirAdvisor said in its report.
Emirates’ A380 Shower Spa comes in second, and is exclusively available to first class flyers. While in the sky, passengers can access a dedicated shower room with a vanity area, changing space and heated flooring.
Rounding off the top three is an experience from a European carrier: SWISS’ First Grand Suite.
Unveiled in 2025 and launched in 2026, this product offers a heightened level of privacy: combining two adjoining first class suites, including the aisle, to create a fully secluded space on long-haul flights. The private area can function as a bedroom, office or meeting room for up to three travellers.
