Reality TV star takes over decades-old Northern California animal rescue

The cat’s out of the bag.

‘My Cat From Hell’ star Jackson Galaxy is taking over a Napa Valley animal rescue, with plans to turn it into a safe haven for cats in need.

The internet personality will transform the We Care Animal Rescue in St. Helena, California into the headquarters of the Jackson Galaxy project, a new nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk kitties.

Galaxy, a cat expert who hosted the Animal Planet show “My Cat from Hell” from 2011 to 2020, will chair the center’s new board of directors.

Today, the LA resident, who is also known as the “Cat Daddy”, posts cat-focused content on YouTube.

Galaxy says he aims to a create “a new model for cat welfare that places the physical, emotional and mental needs of cats at the center.”

“I began my career working with cats in animal shelters over three decades ago, so this feels like coming back to my roots,” he said in a news release.

“The site will allow us to innovate and model the future of cat welfare, which looks really different from the majority of today’s shelters,” Galaxy continued.

“The Jackson Galaxy Project will be a place where all cats — whether they are in homes, in shelters or in our communities — can be spoken for.”

Located at 1345 Charter Oak Ave. in St. Helena, We Care Animal Rescue has been caring for animals since 1982. The center’s cats roam freely without cages, except when separation is needed for their own health or the well-being of another feline.

Under the new leadership, the rescue will continue its educational programs.

“Jackson has always been about giving cats a voice, and we were lucky to partner on that work,” said Liz Baker, CEO of Greater Good Charities, which plans to continue collaborating with the rescue under its new banner.

“The Jackson Galaxy Project will show what sheltering can look like when it’s built around what cats actually need.”

The project will debut a new website this fall.

Until then, prospective volunteers and adopters can still visit We Care’s page to find out how they can help — or bring a furry friend home.

The need is especially great in California, where thousands of shelter cats are waiting for their forever families.

In Los Angeles alone, nearly one million unowned “community cats” are estimated to be roaming the streets.
