The Belarusian Foreign Ministry has warned Poland about a possible terrorist threat on Polish soil.

Polish security services are reviewing the information and say they treat any potential threats seriously.

On Thursday, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry announced that it had met with Poland’s chargé d’affaires in Belarus, Krzysztof Ożanna.

According to a statement, Belarusian officials used the meeting to share information about the purported attack with their Polish counterparts.

The details

The communiqué from the Belarusian Foreign Ministry indicates that the case involves a person living in Poland, who, it says, has a previous criminal conviction and who had recently lost both additional protection and the right to remain in Poland.

Belarusian authorities say that the individual was planning an attack targeting the children of a Belarusian activist living in Poland.

They claim the motive for the planned attack was revenge, alleging that the activist had failed to do enough to help the suspect keep a particular legal status in Poland.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry said it was prepared to provide Warsaw with further information if needed.

Security services examining the case

The Polish Press Agency asked Jacek Dobrzyński, a spokesperson for the minister coordinating the special services, for comment.

“I am not commenting on media reports on this matter. I can assure you, however, that Polish services never downplay any worrying signal and that they approach all information about potential threats with due seriousness and determination,” Dobrzyński said.

Dobrzyński noted that the special services do not usually publicly disclose their activities while investigations are in the early stages.

“It is also perfectly normal that intelligence services anywhere in the world do not disclose, at this stage, whether they have taken any action or what those actions might be,” he added.

Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, has also commented on the matter.

Asked by journalists in Warsaw on Friday about the Belarusian information, he said that every terrorism warning is taken seriously.

“This is a matter from several hours ago which we are still examining, but of course we treat every warning about terrorism seriously and verify it,” Sikorski said.
