LOS ANGELES () — Students on Tuesday returned to Palisades Charter High School for the first time since the Palisades Fire burned through much of the campus just over a year ago.
Thirty-six temporary bungalows have been set up on the baseball field to accommodate classes. A new permanent concrete building is set to be completed and open by 2028.
The Los Angeles Unified School District says it continues to do testing and added air quality monitors around campus.
A refurbished department store in Santa Monica served as a temporary campus, but students told Eyewitness News they are eager to return to their original campus.
Roxie Bakhtari, a junior, said it feels like they’re finally resuming their story.
“I just think it’s going to be so nice to be able to finally sit with my friends in the junior spot on the quad, and kind of have that junior year experience that I’ve been looking forward to for all these years.”
While some were re-familiarizing themselves with the campus, others got to walk onto the school as Pali Dolphins for the first time.
“My high school experience, my first day of school, wasn’t really a real experience but now that I’m here, this is my first day of high school,” said freshman Oscar Lopez.
Parents were also on hand to commemorate the students’ return to campus, and more importantly, to celebrate their resilience.
“Our students lost their sense of normal so just being able to welcome them back this morning just gives us hope,” said parent Mariam Engle.
Students see the reopening of their high school as a sign the Palisades is healing.
