Off-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy charged in shooting death of her fiancée in their Tustin apartment

TUSTIN, Calif. () — An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy has been charged in the shooting death of her fiancée in their Tustin apartment. She was off-duty at the time of the shooting.

Aimee Alexis Hidalgo, 28, turned herself into Tustin police Monday. She is accused of shooting her fiancee, 35-year-old Brittany Shaw nine times after she returned from walking the dog.

The deadly shooting happened on Aug. 8 at the Axiom Apartments in the 13000 block of Tustin East Drive.

Tustin police responded to the scene and found Shaw with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to county leaders, when Shaw returned home from walking her dog at around 5:20 a.m., the deputy allegedly thought she was an intruder and shot the victim.

Hidalgo called 911 and gave Shaw CPR in an effort to resuscitate her, but was unsuccessful.

Shaw was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Hidalgo is being charged with voluntary manslaughter and using a personal firearm, both felonies.

The couple was planning a destination wedding in Mexico in November 2025. Both Hidalgo and Shaw worked at the Orange County Jail.

Authorities say Shaw worked for the Orange County Health Care Agency and was living with the deputy. Her work involved inmates just booked into the jail system, Orange County Supervisor Don Wagner said.

Health Care Agency Director Veronica Kelley sent a memo to staff “with great sadness” about the death of Shaw, who worked for six years at the Intake Release Center.

Kelley said Shaw was the correctional health services chief.

“Her loss will be felt deeply by those who knew her throughout all levels of the HCA and the county family,” Kelly wrote in the memo.

The deputy is on administrative leave while the investigation into the deadly shooting continues.

She faces a maximum sentence of 21 years in state prison.
