Northern California to get 25-acre surf resort with bungalows, hotel as plans revealed

California’s next big surf spot could be hundreds of miles from the ocean.

Plans for a sprawling surf resort in Placer County have cleared a major hurdle, with county planners approving a 25-acre destination that will bring a giant surf lagoon, wave pool, hotel, skate park and more to the Sacramento-area suburbs.

The Alchemy Surf Resort, proposed by Inland Surf Company, is planned for the massive Placer One development in west Placer County, transforming a vacant field into what developers envision as an action-sports and hospitality destination.

The centerpiece will be a 5-acre surf lagoon, along with a standing wave pool, beaches and activity areas.

The resort is also slated to include a 100-room hotel, bungalows and a 28,390-square-foot surf center.

For those who prefer their California recreation on dry land, the plans call for an outdoor skate plaza, children’s playground, spas and cold plunges, plus an action-sports hub packed with trampolines, climbing walls and indoor skating facilities.

Food, drinks and shopping would be available at several “side shore” hubs around the property, which would also provide gathering and member spaces.

“Alchemy Surf Resort represents another step in the development of the Placer One area and adds a new recreational and hospitality use to the mix of uses planned for west Placer,” said Placer County Planning Director Chris Pahule.

“The project has gone through the county’s planning and review process, and the approved plans provide a framework for the applicant to provide a unique recreational destination business to the community.”

The resort will be part of the much larger Placer One project, which is planned to include homes, schools, parks, businesses, open space and a town center, along with the future Sacramento State Placer Center and a county forensics lab.

The surf resort could also give nearby businesses a shot in the arm.

Gauravdeep Chima, owner of Farms’ Pizza near the proposed site, previously told ABC10 the development could bring plenty of new customers.

“The development is going to bring a lot of people, tourists,” Chima said. “One of the reasons we are feeling grateful for being here is that there’s so much that is coming to the north of us, right? There is so much development that’s going to happen.”

Water use has been one of the questions surrounding the project, but the Placer County Water Agency has said it has the capacity and planned infrastructure to serve the resort’s anticipated needs.

Inland Surf Company is now targeting Spring 2027 to break ground.
