Move over, In-N-Out: America’s best burger has been crowned again

California may have a reputation for sunshine, celebrities and impossible-to-afford real estate — but the Golden State’s true crown jewel might just be its burgers.

And once again, one Santa Barbara-born chain is proving it doesn’t need a huge following or a trendy secret menu to take the throne.

The burger battle has a repeat winner: Habit Burger & Grill’s Double Char reclaimed the top spot in USA Today’s annual ranking for the second year running, flipping past big-name rivals like Five Guys, Shake Shack and Cali’s cult favorite, In-N-Out.

The victory marks a major upset in the never-ending West Coast burger wars. In-N-Out has long been the state’s reigning burger heavyweight — and for good reason.

As The Post previously reported in 2025, the Animal-Style chain was crowned America’s best fast-food burger by Yelp, with its iconic Double-Double earning praise from legions of devoted fans.

But Habit Burger & Grill has been quietly building its own burger empire.

It previously landed just behind In-N-Out in Yelp’s ranking, with its signature Charburger — topped with caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles and mayo on a toasted bun — earning a spot among America’s most beloved fast-food burgers.

Now, Habit has officially flipped the script.

The winning burger earned USA Today’s top spot thanks to thousands of votes from readers and food experts, proving that the little flame-grilled contender can still out-sizzle the fast-food giants.

Sorry, Double-Double fans. The burger battle has a new champ.

Habit Burger & Grill’s flame-grilled Double Char is proving the Golden State’s fiercest crown jewel might just be its burgers — beating out In-N-Out, Shake Shack and Five Guys for the second year in a row.

Their secret sauce? Keeping it simple.

The Double Char stacks two flame-kissed beef patties with caramelized onions, crunchy lettuce, juicy tomato, pickles and mayo on a toasted bun — with the option to throw cheese into the mix for an even more decadent bite.

But the secret ingredient isn’t just what’s on top — it’s what happens underneath.

Unlike many fast-food competitors that rely on flat-top grills, Habit Burger & Grill has been cooking its patties over an open flame since opening its first location in 1969, giving its burgers the smoky flavor that has become its signature.

The company’s roots go back to Goleta, California, near Santa Barbara, where the original Hamburger Habit opened as a small family-style burger stand. Brothers Brent and Bruce Reichard purchased the restaurant in 1980 and helped transform the local favorite into a national brand.

Today, Habit Burger & Grill has more than 350 locations and remains known for its California-inspired menu — but the Double Char is the item that has officially stolen the spotlight.

The chain has had plenty of bragging rights before, too.

The Double Char’s winning formula is no secret recipe — just two juicy patties, classic toppings and a distinct char that Habit Burger & Grill has perfected since firing up its first grill in the late 60s. Habit Burger & Grill

In 2014, Habit was crowned America’s best burger chain by Consumer Reports, and the brand later underwent a refresh, rebranding as Habit Burger & Grill in 2024 after its acquisition by Yum! Brands.

Now, it has another trophy for the trophy case.

Habit Burger & Grill may have stolen the crown, but the rest of USA Today’s top 10 was a who’s who of fast-food favorites.

In-N-Out’s iconic Double-Double came in second, followed by Freddy’s Original Double, A&W’s Papa Burger, Culver’s ButterBurger Cheese Double, Shake Shack’s SmokeShack, Five Guys’ Cheeseburger, Burger King’s Whopper, Wendy’s Son of Baconator and Whataburger’s Double Meat Whataburger.

The ranking proved that while burger battles may never be settled, there’s a new patty on top.

The Cali burger wars are heating up: In-N-Out had its moment when Yelp crowned the Double-Double America’s best in 2025, but Habit Burger & Grill stole the spotlight this year, reclaiming USA Today’s No. 1 spot with its Double Char. Jonathan Alcorn for CA Post

While In-N-Out may still have its fiercely loyal fans, the new ranking suggests burger lovers are ready to look beyond the usual suspects.

Because sometimes the best burger in America isn’t the one with the longest line — it’s the one with the perfect char.
