Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross Split After 9 Years, Vow to Continue to Be the ‘Best Parents’ to Their Son

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross are going their separate ways before 2025 comes to an end.

“Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” Gibson, 69, and Ross, 35, shared in a joint statement via People on Tuesday, December 30, when announcing their split.

According to the publication, the couple quietly broke up about a year ago, but have vowed to continue coparenting their 8-year-old son, Lars.

Us Weekly has reached out to Gibson’s rep for comment.

2025 kicked off with a slew of celebrity breakups. Two months after first sparking split rumors, Jessica Simpson announced that she and Eric Johnson had called it quits after 10 years of marriage. “Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” she told Us Weekly in a January 13 […]

Gibson met Ross through mutual friends in 2014 and began dating soon after. They welcomed their first child together in 2017, just days before Gibson celebrated his Oscar nomination for Best Director thanks to his work with Hacksaw Ridge.

“What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son,” Gibson said in a statement at the time. “This is a truly wonderful honor.”

In addition to Lars, Gibson has eight older children, including daughter Hannah and six adult sons, Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo and Thomas, with ex-wife Robyn Moore. He also has a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with ex Oksana Grigorieva.

At the start of 2025, Gibson and Ross experienced a difficult loss when their home in Malibu, California, was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires.

Wyatt welcomed her 11th baby, son Ke’zyah, in September 2022, which is her second with husband Zackariah Darring. The singer and Darring also share son Ke’Riah. Wyatt also shares six older children with ex-husband Rahman Morton and three […]

The actor was out of town working at the time, but his family and their animals were safely evacuated.

“The good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well, and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way,” he shared on the January 9 episode of NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports. “That’s all I can care about, really.”

Since then, Gibson has been working on The Resurrection of the Christ, which is the follow-up project to his 2004 biblical drama The Passion of the Christ. The film is expected to be broken up into two films, with Part One hitting theaters on March 26, 2027, while Part Two will launch 40 days later on Ascension Day, which falls on May 6, 2027.

“Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson previously shared when announcing the project. “My relationship with Mel and [producer] Bruce [Davey] dates back 30 years, and I am thrilled to be partnering with them once again on this landmark event for audiences.”

While Gibson has celebrated success in Hollywood, the actor and director has also shared a glimpse into his private world as a father.

In November 2016, the Oscar nominee said he thinks of himself as a good, hands-on father, but knows he’s far from perfect.

“As a parent, everybody screws up,” he told The Sunday Times Magazine. “There’s no such thing as a perfect parent and it’s so easy to mess up. But hopefully I’ve screwed up less than most.”
